So, after weld tests, two physicals and two drug tests the company I did these for tell me my job has been put on hold, the day before I sign on. Is this a normal thing to happen? Kinda upset me cause I had put in my notice and everything, per the new company, at my old job. Sorry, guess I'm just venting. Why tell me I've got the job only to tell me they don't know when I can start?
Reply:The world is a goofy place. Businesses have things to deal with too. Why wouldn't you be able to stay on with your current job?
Reply:That sucks. Reply:Ima try and talk to my store manager and see if he can and will throw me a bone by keeping me on. I guess that's life though. Back to the drawing board fellas. Ima update my resume with my new certs and send that to every company I can.
Reply:Were the tests done specifically for the new company?
Reply:Yeah, I did both my weld tests at the company fab shop. Then they sent me to two physicals and both a hair and urine drug test.
Reply:2 drug screens? this company is mighty careful. what are they building that they want to be extra sure you're squeaky clean?i.u.o.e. # 15queens, ny and sunny fla
Reply:A hair sample, that actually required both armpits shaved and a urine sample. Without giving it away it's stuff for the railroad. Just in case someone happens to but the pieces together. Haha.
Reply:It happens, here in South Texas Fracking Companies were hiring to meet demand then  oil prices dropped some guys showed up to orientation only to be told they had no job.
Reply:I hope I catch a break soon. Retail work has killed my people side.
Reply:I had a very similar occurrence once in a galaxy far far away. 2 interviews, passed drug test / physical, shook regional managers hand, fitted for uniforms, even watched safety films for a few hours. When I came back the next morning the super met me at the door looking a little green and squeaked out "hiring freeze". Could be a couple of weeks or maybe a month or two or three or ten.  I said well, hmm......I got a call back a couple of months later, but I declined. I did end up getting a check for $41 about 6 months later.

Reply:That's kinda what the lady told me, week or two, maybe several months. I guess only time will tell. When I first got the news I was pretty upset but hey, what ya gonna do about it, ya know?
Reply:Apparently hair tests are all the new rage.

Reply:That's just it, I can't think of what it could be I did. Then again maybe hiring was actually put on hold from higher ups. Who knows.
Reply:My question is why do you think you can't continue working the job you are still on? You got to be a big screw up for that to happen.
Reply:Well I already had put in my notice per say the company. My boss at my retail job wasn't so happy to hear about me leaving. I haven't spoken to him yet about retracting my notice, so I don't know what he will actually have to say.
Reply:If you are of any use at all to the company I can't see it being an issue.

Reply:It shouldn't be, sir. Just thought I had finally gotten out of the hell which is retail work and into my career.
Reply:The world we live in now I suppose. Sorry to hear about your friend. That would be horrible to tie up 16 weeks into something only to get railroaded out of graduation. Pun intended??

Reply:The tests you passed aren't transferable to another job if they were done specifically for the company that gave them.

Reply:What kills me is the random "some drugs*" screenings (this is an insurance company thing, for the record, which is a big reason it doesn't have to make sense but companies do it anyways). If someone has been with the company and excelling at their job for a long time, why in the world would a positive drug test be a reason to let them go?  If you didn't have special cause to investigate (an accident, poor performance, or behavioral issue) why would it matter if the person is using something?  It demonstrably is not affecting their employment if you DIDN'T HAVE SPECIAL CAUSE TO INVESTIGATE.The world in which we live, indeed.*I say "some drugs" because only some are a "problem."  You can take OTC or doctor-prescribed schedule drugs, and you can smoke tobacco or drink all the alcohol you want, and those are fine.  Smoke or drink the wrong thing, and now it's an issue.  People are weird about chemicals, and this is a biochemist talking (writing) for the record.Outrunning my headlights since '81.

Reply:The reason I was given for them asking for both when I went to work for the railroad was more or less to see if you're lying. We've got a guy that put down that he smoked weed 6mo before the interview and he got hired as the drug test matched what he said.Once you're hired at the railroad you can get high as a kite provided you call the help line and ask to go to rehab. I've heard some guys going to rehab four and five times once they were on...-Robert

Reply:Well guess I should post a sitrep, still nothing. I called them last week to check in and let them know I've gotten more certs since my interview. The lady told me she doesn't know when or if she will get the "green light" to call me back in.
Reply:A) you dont owe them any favors.B) they certainly didnt do you any favors.C) they arent the only place to work.Go find a job, and stop waiting on them.  the longer they wait to call, the less chance they actually will call.  Dont hold your breath for them, you will pass out long before they call.PM me the company ... i used to live in SW, VA .... but i got tired of crappy jobs in the SE ... moved west for better stuff.AWS CWI xxxx21711968 SA200  Originally Posted by WelderMike  I hate being bipolar, It's awesome.
Reply:PM sent. The job hunt continues. I'm hoping I get some calls or news after new years from any of the multiple companies I've sent my info to.
