Reply:What, you didn't have a QC gearbox before? The model with the QC gearbox has a very different leadscrew than the one without.
Reply:yeah someone gave me a gearbox for cheap so i was going to try and put it on . i couldnt find any info on it. is it even possible to do if i haveget the correct lead screw??miller bobcat 250 ntsouth bend metal latheClausing verticle millrikon 17" bandsaweverlast 250exharris oxyfuel set upspeedglass AD helmet with adflo power respirator.
Reply:If the gearbox is for that series South Bend a correct leadscrew should get you up and running. If you are wanting the power feeds to work you'll need a 'A' or "B" model apron and carriage along with the splined leadscrew. I converted my 'C' model to a "B" model for the power feeds, but didn't see enough reason to convert to an "A" model. Remember, the "C" model apron and carriage only work with the "C" model leadscrew.Lincoln PrecisionTig 275Miller 251Miller DialArc 250Bridgeport millHossfeld bender & diesLogan shaperJet 14 X 40 latheSouth Bend 9" 'C'Hypertherm 900Ellis 3000 band saw21"Royersford ExcelsiorTwo shops, still too many tools.
Reply:i just want to go from a C to a B as well. any specs or ideas to get a lead screw you can give?thanks! jaymiller bobcat 250 ntsouth bend metal latheClausing verticle millrikon 17" bandsaweverlast 250exharris oxyfuel set upspeedglass AD helmet with adflo power respirator.
Reply:Sorry, bought the new(er) lead screw off an old fellow that used to advertise in the hobby engineer magazines who has passed away since. The name escapes me right at the moment.Lincoln PrecisionTig 275Miller 251Miller DialArc 250Bridgeport millHossfeld bender & diesLogan shaperJet 14 X 40 latheSouth Bend 9" 'C'Hypertherm 900Ellis 3000 band saw21"Royersford ExcelsiorTwo shops, still too many tools.
Reply:Fred Eisner or Plaza Machinery might have what you need. Not sure about the South Bends, but my Clausing (and I'm sure many others) have a shear pin just outside the RH side of QCGB where it attaches to leadscrew. Common sense as the pin can never approach the value of any item in the gear box.
Reply:Not sure, but I don't believe the "C" model uses the shear pin if you are going to cut it down to convert. If you need a good source for parts, check out the eBay seller ipenelopepitstop. Ronnie has always proven honest, dependable, accurate in his descriptions and fair in his pricing.Last edited by WyoRoy; 03-14-2012 at 12:35 AM.Lincoln PrecisionTig 275Miller 251Miller DialArc 250Bridgeport millHossfeld bender & diesLogan shaperJet 14 X 40 latheSouth Bend 9" 'C'Hypertherm 900Ellis 3000 band saw21"Royersford ExcelsiorTwo shops, still too many tools.
Reply:penelopepitstop...Is this the same guy I remember from Practical Machinist?
Reply:It is. I don't follow Practical Machinist often, did he get into a dust up over there? While I can say a lot about his honesty in his business dealings, I have no idea what his personal opinions are like.Lincoln PrecisionTig 275Miller 251Miller DialArc 250Bridgeport millHossfeld bender & diesLogan shaperJet 14 X 40 latheSouth Bend 9" 'C'Hypertherm 900Ellis 3000 band saw21"Royersford ExcelsiorTwo shops, still too many tools.
Reply:figured id fill everyone in on  the lathe progress. i ended up not being able to find a lead screw because my lathe is and uncommon size according to  guys who sell parts. so the choice ended up being to modify my current lead screw. i had to cut it down to length which ended up being  30"  overall. then i turned down the end to .625 to fit the inside of the gear and and tapped a 5/16" hole in the end to be able to put a bolt in to hold the gear.next i milled out the keyway. i then put it all together in the gearboz and turned a steel ring to weld onto the leadscrew shaft to  hold against the outside of he gearbox and welded it on and wella! QC gearbox is good to go! now all i need is a banjo gear to replace the one that was broken on it but it still works its just missing a tooth.miller bobcat 250 ntsouth bend metal latheClausing verticle millrikon 17" bandsaweverlast 250exharris oxyfuel set upspeedglass AD helmet with adflo power respirator.
