So what do ya think boys? Some Armor all and a little touch up paint here and there? One of three machines that followed me home today. This one, a G9Pro and a M****R TrailBlazer 250G.This one turns over with the starter button and the fire was caused by a fuel leak and what else? Sparks from a welder. A new "metal" faceplate is now available from www.decalshoppe.com Fix er up? You bet!  Attached ImagesMiller LegendMiller XMT 200Miller HF 251DMiller Spoolmatic 30AMillerTrailBlazer 250GLincoln LN 25Lincoln G9 ProLincWelder 225Lincoln Ranger 9Lincoln Ranger 275TJhttp://onanparts.com

Reply:So....hooked up the loadbank this afternoon....wait a sec....loadbank? Somebody roasted lunch on that welder ain't no way it's going to light off....Hmmmmmm......Wait! I'll hook up an external gas tank first.Done. Now lets go.......Crank....crank.....Vrooom! 300 amps and purrs like a kitty. Not bad for 4,600 hours on the clock. This one did foul a plug about every 50 hours, the Kohlers do that North of 4000. Right cylinder as you face the flywheel. But she is a runner and puts out good juice so a ring and valve job at minimum and then? Hmmmmm.More pics and some video soon, it started raining and getting dark so I called it a day!Miller LegendMiller XMT 200Miller HF 251DMiller Spoolmatic 30AMillerTrailBlazer 250GLincoln LN 25Lincoln G9 ProLincWelder 225Lincoln Ranger 9Lincoln Ranger 275TJhttp://onanparts.com
Reply:I had a chance between rain showers today to put it on the loadbank and grab a short video. Analog voltmeter is not hooked back up yet on the loadbank but I always have the Fluke digitals handy. Reply:TJ!Can the bearing face area be built up and then re bored and faced by a machine shop, or would that cost more than its worth?#1. If you don't like what I wrote, or if it offends you, then don't read it!#2. I am living life the way I see fit, if you don't like the way I'M living, tough sh**!

Reply:Nice score!    Gives new meaning to a hot deal! What I want to know is what did you you use for bait to get them to jump in your truck?    Toasting them to just the right price without destroying the windings is an art form.    My luck I get a nice shiny outside and a burnt out generator.... It shows how well they really are built.    The figures you give about hours and wear are valuable information. Those hard numbers are hard to get, and are a lot better numbers than I have heard before. It makes it much easier to look at used machines.     I think what Ken meant, was could the bearings be bored out and replaced with oilite bronze bushings? or welded up and rebored to size?.     To answer my own question and his, probably. The old briggs and stratton manuals had procedures for reaming out egg shaped bearings and pressing in new bushings and reaming them to size. Same with valve guides. They show a tapered bridge reamer and guide. I have done it on several engines, including OHC ford car engines and motorcyles, but not a kohler. I have done rod bearings as well, with a split bronze bushing in the aluminum rod. The important thing is to make sure it is tight in the aluminum, and has the right clearance on the crank. Welded bearings may work. but warpage may be a problem. And oil soaked castings are not he easiest to weld.     I did have problems with the balancer shaft gears on single cylinder Kohlers at one time, with a bit of wear the backlash would cause the timing gears to start hammering and the ballance weight would bust to pieces. Didn't get around to cutting off the gears and pressing on new ones.       You could use adjustable reamers and stock bronze bushings. Try MSC tools or Enco for custom reamer sizes. and stock bushings. The little 7x10 mini lathes are good bushing cutters. That machine just fit in the side pocket of my truck utility bed. Used it for a lot of repairs. I bought one in 2000, just for that job. Don't have the truck, but the lathe is still on a shelf...  May be uneconomical if you were doing it for someone else by the hour. A good shop could do it with a mill and boring head as well.past work toys; lathes, mills, drills, saws,  robots, lasers ironworker, shears, brake, press, grinders, tensile tester,  torches, tigs, migs, sticks, platten table, positioner,  plasmas , gleeble and spot. Retired June 30, 2009.

Reply:As far as bait I can't give away all my secrets...On the bearing issue for an average owner of a Kohler V twin if there is an oil feed failure or if not serviced on a regular basis severe damage or wear will occur to the main bearing area of the block. The CH series is a tough engine and if taken care of will last a long time. But they were designed to be "disposable" and not rebuilt over and over again like the Onan twins. That was the point I was trying to make. The Kohler is a very good engine but with a limited lifespan. Cam and main bearing's are easily replaced on the Onan. Sure, you could machine the Kohler block and install insert bearing's but it's not something the average Joe is going to be able to do.The pics here of the inside of a Kohler CH20, not the one on my Ranger 275, show plenty of material in the bearing area to work with. Cam bearing area is a real pain due to the fact they are both blind. Last pic drives home the big difference in the two designs.Kohler oil filter adapter is cast as part of the engine cover. If it's busted or damaged badly time for a new cover. This will require removing the engine from the welder. Also Kohler used RTV on the cover and there is no gasket. They are known to leak after X number of hours. The Onan adapter is bolted to the block and replaceable without removing the engine.Below the Onan filter adapter is a replaceable main bearing. Notice the oil pump on the Kohler. Plastic drive gear with aluminum housing and plastic pickup. Onan oil pump is cast iron and steel with an automotive style pickup. The Onan pumps are overbuilt and will last for many rebuilds. Now, after bashing the Kohler design I have to say that this Ranger 275 with the CH20 and 4658 hours with multiple operators, spotty maintenance and nearly run into the ground and then torched/BBQ'd and left for dead is still standing! The Kohler is made here in the US and even when we do it cheap we do it better than anybody anywhere else!!!!
