I bought some RR spikes off ebay to do cool stuff with. What is the best method to weld them? I have a 110 MIG a 110 Stick and a 220 volt Century Stick welder (beastly welder). I want to make crosses and such for selling as gifts.Zach WareOwnerMid-GA Outdoor & Equipment ServiceByron GA478-960-2014

Reply:For that sort of stuff, just about anything that sticks metal together would work. For "art" many times you don't want welds to show. In that case a process than minimizes the weld and gives you the most control is the best vs something that makes a "strong" weld.I know with a lot of blacksmithing projects where we want electric welds to be minimized or hidden, tig often wins. Mig would be #2 using gas and small .023 wire. Stick is usually a distant last. The design of the project also lends itself to shaping what process makes the most sense. In some cases where you want to hide a weld, stick with it's long reach can allow you to weld in places other processes won't..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:Your Century welder is probably an AC machine, do NOT try to use 70/18 on it as it is a DC rod! There are AC versions of 7018 but most guys are dissatisfied with the performance.Instead for "Art" go with 6013 rod as it is usually pretty easy to work with.As far as welding RR Spikes, I would experiment with Mig to see if I can get the desired Look, then struggle through the strength of Weld issue.
