There seems to be a lot of equipment trailer building experience on this board.Has anyone built an enclosed trailer?I've a 16+2 Hudson beavertail equipment trailer rated at 12K. 1st pic. It's primary purpose is to haul my tractors and other equipment. Example second pic.  I need the whole thing sometimes.I needed to haul several tons of mulch so I put a 2x6 frame on and put down a tarp.  Worked OK.   You can see the "frame" in the third pic.  Next I needed to move "stuff" down to Mississippi so I put added a plywood box, 3/4" PT for sides, 1/2" PT for top.  I think it will work well.Total investment above the cost of the trailer about $600, and it holds 6.5'Wx4'Hx16'L, a fair amount.  About 1/3 the cost was nuts and bolts.  It takes about 1 or 2 hours for me to casually disassemble and maybe the twice that to reassemble.  Now I'm wondering what it would take to build a typical 6' high "box" w/ better framing so I could "drop" it onto my equipment trailer, properly fastened of course.  Has anyone here done such?  Made an enclosed/open trailer "convertible"?Any links for more ideas? It needs to be removable so I can use the trailer for other things. Thanks in advance. Reply:I once made an offroad tear-drop camper from an old military pintle hitch equipped ammo trailer. I framed it out of wood and used that white plastic skin that they use as bathroom back splashes for the outer skin (on top of plywood). I have thought about making an enclosed before and it seems like it would be a relatively easy venture to frame with steel and rivet an aluminum or light gauge steel skin to that like the typical trailer manufacturer would. If you wanted it convertable, your could use heavier steel for the framing, design some lift points into it, and make it a bolt on deal that you could take on/off with a gantry crane or the like. It could also double as a carport or something for equipment when not in use. Then again, as mentioned by M J D, if the trailer can handle the extra weight along with the payload, and the dimensions are right, maybe a shipping container would be a cheaper, better, faster option. Anyway, just a thought..-NicheLast edited by NicheFab; 10-31-2014 at 07:31 AM.
Reply:I made one many years ago. They can be made with very light material because in your case you already have all the frame you need. In y experience tho it's always been cheaper and better to buy another trailer than to make a convertable one. A used stock or enclosed trailer probly won't cost much more than for you to build the conversion and will work better. In my experience  convertables end up not working well for either purpose. Also, will you want to take the time to install and remove the top all the time when for about the same money you could just hook to another trailer.Yeah, I know, but it'll be ok!Lincoln Square wave 255Miller Vintage mig30a spoolgunThermal Dynamics Pacmaster 100xl plasmaSmith mc torchEllis 1600 band saw

Reply:I'm pretty sure that the 20' shipping containers weigh about 5,000 lbs. That would take away a lot of load capacity.GravelThe difference between theory and practice is that in theory there is no difference.
Reply:I have seen several utility trailers with old Ryder truck boxes mounted on them
