Hey Guys,  New guy here and I had a question that I could use some advice. I contracted a guy to build me a off road bumper and tire carrier with 2 jerry can holders. We had talked about what the design would be and he knew what he was talking about so I said I trusted him and to go forward. I picked it up this weekend and my Dad (35 year mason) said the jerry can holder did not look like it would hold up to the abuse that I would give it, being I drive 2-3 hundred miles off road. All the guy did was make the cans and put 3 or 4 2 inch welds at the 2x2 bar. So my first question is will this hold to the abuse of 80-100lbs of wash board and rock crawling or do I need to beef it up and how would I beef it up if I need to. Sorry if this is a little confusing. If you have any questions please shoot and thanks!!!
Reply:I wouldn't trust them. I like the basket and latch design. I would cut the baskets off, weld on a flat plate, 3/16 thick maybe to the top of 2x2 bar. The width of baskets extending 60% the depth of the cans out. Then gusset under the plate in 3 locations to the 2x2 bar. Re install mesh baskets on top of plate.
Reply:I don't think those will hold up. The baskets look good, but they need some support, I'd say a pair of 2x2 tubes, either below or along the sides.Ian TannerKawasaki KX450 and many other fine tools
Reply:It's hard to determine from those shots, but seems your departure angle is severely impacted for the worse.-Chris
Reply:Only one way you'll ever know for sure,,,, run 'em, see what happens. They'll start cracking first. Looks like he laid down a heavy bead. Start beefing them up now and you'll never know whether they'll hold up or not."The things that will destroy America are prosperity at any price, peace at any price, safety first instead of duty first, the love of soft living and the get rich quick theory of life." -Theodore Roosevelt
Reply:Only one way to find out.... but I dont think so. I would add some square tube and/or gussets along the bottom or sides like fourtyonethirty said. Reply:Thanks for the responses. I think what I will do is cut the basket off apply the 3/16 plate steel, gusset them and the move the basket back 4 inches closer to the tail gate. That way instead of 13" over hang it will only have 10.5" overhang and that will will at least 6' of gusset plate steel.
Reply:Yes, bring them as close to the hatch as possible. And just a safety tip, I don't suggest driving the streets with full cans on the rear. Keep that to a minimum. A rear ender is bad news and insurance might not cover anything .I have a lifted Rubicon with an LOD rear carrier and my can carriers are 5 feet off the ground mounted high on each side of the tire. Eventually I will get Scepter military cans but I still won't drive the streets with 10 gal. of fuel on the back of my Jeep. 9 months of the year I will carry 5 gal. of water on one side.
