We eat meat in our house….. mostly poultry and fish but some red meats. Rabbit meat, although not a perfect protein by itself, is extremely lean and considered a healthy-heart and healthy-kidney meat.... it's fantastic for most people on dialysis. Anyway.... there are no vegans in my family…. we’re admittedly all unapologetic carnivores so please please please..... reserve hateful comments if you're in the PETA camp. --I made a few rabbit wringers yesterday.  Here’s the original, http://www.therabbitwringer.com/html/about.html. --Here’s my rendition of the commercially available rabbit wringer,--MM 211Smith Tru Lite O/A set, Thanks Bob!Lincoln AC-225--But you must not change one thing, one pebble, one grain of sand, until you know what good and evil will follow on that act. Reply:I keep up to 80 rabbits at a time and I had an original wringer but could never get used to it, it works good on docile rabbits but mine don't get petted ( to many ) . They didn't like me putting there heads in it and started kicking, I went back to the 1 inch rebar to the back of the head trick, just as fast, dead is dead. I use a .22 when a predator gets to one of my animals and leaves them in rough shape. I know they're dead and put out of their misery when I kill them that way because my aim's pretty good. On meat rabbits and chickens.... my friends use the wringers or cones and they come over and take care of mine for me since... I just don't have it in me to kill a healthy animal even if it was raised humanely for food. --missfire> 80 is an awful lot of rabbits. I only have 4 does and 2 bucks and pretty much only breed my females once a year. I usually get a few kits per litter that are show quality and I give those away to kids.... the rest go to freezer camp. I can't imagine having 80. Reply:I've had rabbit several times. I badgered my mom plenty of times to make hassenpheffer for me as a kid. She did it, but not often because the rest of the family wasn't all that keen on it. I've also hand killed live rabbits to eat when camping ( survival classes in scouts). They'd had you a live rabbit or possibly a chicken and tell you to have at it. Reply:Interesting project and nice work. Thanks for sharing. Im too squeamish for it.  My favorite meal is steak and eggs with hashbrowns. The protein in the eggs helps break down the steak and the hashbrowns emulsifies it all IMO.About the rabbit protein; I think the hi protein can lead to poisoning if you eat rabbits more than 30 days in a row.  I have cotton tails and jack rabbits running thru here daily. Are they good eating? I think the jack rabbits would be tough eating as they are so bad a$$ , you can shoot them with a 45 and they keep running.
Reply:Personally, I too cannot bring myself to kill a healthy animal. Some day I'd like to try living in the wilderness and force myself to start hunting, but until then not slaughtering = not eating meat for me. Anyway... nice build. I can always appreciate a simple homemade tool.

I'd probably puke all over if one of my meat chickens ran around without its head. --I thought growing more of our own food was going to be a walk in the park since I propagate native plants for sport. Not so. It's been a very humbling experience. --I got a lot of pantry and preserving help from the Mormons. They're salt of the earth people who aren't greedy with knowledge... all we have to do is ask for help. Learning how to put up food the way our parents and grandparents did to make it through lean times back before there were grocery or convenience stores on every corner when people who had glass jars of preserved foods on shelves and a root cellar weren't labeled "food hoarders" has proven to be quite the challenge. Incredibly, I didn't have any interest in putting up food until we had a power outage that lasted 8 days and we lost everything in our deep freeze. I pert near cried since I've always been so good about stocking up when meats were on sale and when frozen veggies were selling 2 for the price of one. Best guess.... I lost over 2k in frozen food when we lost power. We had a generator and it helped keep the freezer going until.... gas stations were wiped out of gas to keep it going. All fixed…. added one / to the 2nd link. --“the link your shared link answered my question about eating horse. We dont do it because of the protien poison. Horse are lean and may be Kosher but too much protein leads to starvation?”--Horse meat is perfectly fine for human consumption. The primary reason Americans don’t eat horse meat is because a small number of people with an agenda deemed it politically incorrect to do so…  not because it isn’t nutritious…. It is.  And not because it’s a protein poison…. it isn’t. Interestingly enough, horse meat probably has nutritional advantages over beef…. shhhh…. that’s a secret that’s not supposed to be discussed in “polite” American circles. Regardless, the rest of the world eats horse meat and Mr. Ed is a delicacy throughout Europe yet…. Americans can’t add Mr. Ed to our diet…. lest we be labeled culturally barbaric by the PETA camp and all those backing them.  Personally, I'd like to see a return to horse meat as a commodity... as in….. no more legislation intended to ban it from our tables and pet foods.  Those who would like to eat it should be able to do so, it should be made available for use in our pet foods once again, zoos should once again be able to purchase it to feed their birds of prey & large cats, and….. the single greatest reason would be the ability to directly export it overseas for human consumption. It seems so cold and heartless to me that we would incinerate so many unwanted animals when we know there are very hungry humans willing to eat them. We export chicken.... lamb.... beef... and other meats overseas for human consumption…. why not horse meat or to that end…. cat or dog meat which… is still eaten in Mexico and throughout most of Asia? We should all try taking an emotional step back….  if our powers that be let us eat one animal…. why the recent singling out of another as a no no? Any objection to a particular meat is strictly political in my most humble opinion and we best be on our toes as pertains to the ongoing attempt to elevate the life of an animal to that of a human being….  the decades long campaign tying what goes in our mouths to our morality was so successful…. Daisy the cow now appears to be missile locked in their sights.--Horse is a leaner red meat but…. it’s not a kosher meat. Neither is rabbit…. not that I keep Kosher though.  --Here’s my interpretation….YMMV.... too much protein can lead to acute malnutrition. In the 2nd paper… that one can now actually read, note the maximum urea production and excretion.  This should help cut through to the chase, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rabbit_starvation, “It has been observed that the human liver cannot safely metabolise much more than 285-365 g of protein per day (for an 80 kg person), and human kidneys are similarly limited in their capability to remove urea (a byproduct of protein catabolism) from the bloodstream. Exceeding that amount results in excess levels of amino acids, ammonia (hyperammonemia), and/or urea in the bloodstream, with potentially fatal consequences,[1] especially if the person switches to a high-protein diet without giving time for the levels of his or her hepatic enzymes to upregulate. Since protein only contains 4 kcal/gram, and a typical adult human requires in excess of 1900 kcal to maintain the energy balance, it is possible to exceed the safe intake of protein if one is subjected to a high-protein diet with little or no fat or carbohydrates. However, given the lack of scientific data on the effects of high-protein diets, and the observed ability of the liver to compensate over a few days for a shift in protein intake, the US Food and Nutrition Board does not set a Tolerable Upper Limit nor upper Acceptable Macronutrient Distribution Range for protein.” Now go back to the 1st paper, hunters were discarding hunted ungulates (in this instance, wild caribou not domesticated horses) that were too lean…. it was the end of winter…. the animals themselves were nutritionally stressed and had depleted their fat reserves… they were useless to the hunters (who had been using up their fat reserves) for general energy needs..... which would be consistent with the wise comments made by notsooldordum's dad, "He said that they used to hunt rabbits with a .22. But they would have to sneak up on them and feel their haunches to make sure they were fat enough to be worth a bullet."  A human body needs glucose…..protein doesn’t contain any.  If say.... rabbit meat is our only source of protein… I'd think we should be okay but…. if it’s our only source of food… we better hang onto their furry little feet for good luck because we’re gonna need it!!!  It would appear there’s only so much protein our bodies can safely process in a day.Last edited by Equilibrium; 09-08-2014 at 08:27 PM.Reason: trying to get photo to showMM 211Smith Tru Lite O/A set, Thanks Bob!Lincoln AC-225--But you must not change one thing, one pebble, one grain of sand, until you know what good and evil will follow on that act. Lightning storm and a doe would stomp all the little ones to a pulp. A hutch with a bunch of weaners and they would trample each other in a big booming storm too. Jack rabbits have to be pressure cooked. Long stringy meat. Jack rabbit and noodles. Californians and New Zealands are known for not having the best temperaments yet they're the breeds most commonly raised for meat. Perhaps consider a Champagne d'Argent should you decide to try again? Same 70 to 30 ratio of meat to bone as the other breeds. They're considerably more docile than other meat breeds and not nearly as jumpy.
