Got these new pyrex cups for the tig torch. I gotta say the work pretty good. Nice to see the back side of the weld while welding. Figured I would share the news and get your imput.Operating Engineers Local 3Lincoln SA 200Victor TorchDewalt Grinder10 lbs SledgeWhat more do ya need!
Reply:How long do they stay fully transparent like that?Currently working as a Paralegal, but still interested in hobby welding.Miller Bobcat 225ntOne- Character Fractions: ¼ ½ ¾ ⅛ ⅜ ⅝ ⅞

Reply:I've been running these for a few hours and I love them.  They allow me to get more comfortable many times since I can keep my head up instead of down looking sideways under the cup.  That said, they are NOT as durable by any stretch.  If you buy one, buy two.  I already chipped the outside of my first (doesn't affect performance yet) and have a few extras laying around for when I break it.  I would not walk these cups...I have a little spatter from dipping the electrode in aluminum but any soot cleans off easily enough.  If you want to clean one up you can safely use something like hydrochloric or nitric acid on borosilicate glass.Outrunning my headlights since '81.
Reply:I understand that they work very well but they are very expensive. A check on eBay shows prices from $50 to $75 for one cup. That's a non-starter for me.Miller Millermatic 252Miller Syncrowave 200Liincoln AC-DC 225Victor O-A Set

Reply:Originally Posted by gnm109We're not talking about the same thing. I have #8 cups in ceramics with gas lenses. The one that I want is the extremely large style, #12 or larger. They are more expensive. I'd take a dozen at $10 each.
Reply:As far as I can see, there's no point in changing to Pyrex if the size is only a #8. I first heard about Pyrex from Jody on the video at "Welding Tips and Tricks". He uses them from time to time. The one that he was using on his demonstration video was at least an inch across. He says that they give much better gas coverage, but he has also broken one or two of them. They are rather fragile and should probably not be for everyday use if they are going to chip easily or break. I'd be upset if I even broke a $10 one. I'd sure like to try a really large one, but at the prices they are getting, I probably won't. I did enlarge a #8 to about a #10 by shortening the cone up a bit on the diamond wheel on my carbide tool grinder and it did improve things a bit. That ceramic is incredibly hard, LOL.Miller Millermatic 252Miller Syncrowave 200Liincoln AC-DC 225Victor O-A Set
