The wire will be wrapped around and assembly using threaded rod to set the spacing.  The contact or wrap angle on the threaded rod will be 10-15 degrees.  I want to fasten the 0.018" 1085 steel wire to the 5/16" diameter mild steel threaded rod.  Looking for suggestions for the best method to make this bond.
Reply:Are you looking to weld or braze it? Is this alloy crack sensitive?Weld like a "WELDOR", not a wel-"DERR" MillerDynasty700DX,Dynasty350DX4ea,Dynasty200DX,Li  ncolnSW200-2ea.,MillerMatic350P,MillerMatic200w/spoolgun,MKCobraMig260,Lincoln SP-170T,PlasmaCam/Hypertherm1250,HFProTig2ea,MigMax1ea.
Reply:I'm looking to fasten the wires and the best process to do it.  The assembly won't have to hold up to heat and won't have much stress on the wires either.I tried heating to solder with a mapp gas torch, the wires went red hot and broke in an instant.  I tried soldering with an acid flux, plumbers solder and electric solder iron but could not always get the solder to wet the wire or substrate.I don't know much about 1085, it's sold as music wire.

Reply:What about drilling a hole in rod, stick wire in, and heat and a dab of silfoss or solder ?
Reply:You may be able to do it with a jewelers torch setupwww.georgesplasmacuttershop.comPlasma Cutter and Welder Sales and Repairs--Ebay storeTec.Mo. Dealer Consumables for the PT and IPT torch's
Reply:Soldering with tin/lead is what I would do. But with electronics solder not plumbing solder. And soldering paste flux.Important part would be to tin the 5/16 rod first. Clean if first with a knife, wire brush or something. Not sandpaper. Heat it up with the torch, apply the paste flux and tin it with some electronics solder. Then you need to tin the wire. Scrape it with a knife, you want bare metal. Tin it using the solder paste an use the soldering iron. Then when you have tin on both parts it's easy to solder them together. Use paste flux here again.

Reply:Is the wire at the end of the rod?Could the part be dipped in a solder pot?Miller a/c-d/c Thunderbolt XLMillermatic 180 Purox O/ASmith Littletorch O/AHobart Champion Elite
Reply:silver solder?    What are you doing exactly? Are you using the threaded rod to make a correct helix on the wire, then removing the wire for use on another assembly?  Or does the wire remain affixed to the threaded rod?
Reply:Thanks for all the suggestions.  Drilling is not practical for the number of wires I have.  The wire will wrap the rod in the thread about 15 degrees, this is the area I want to bond.  If I have to scrape the wire to solder at every contact point that probably won't be practical either, there are about 500 contact points in one assembly.  Starting to wonder if a good epoxy isn't the best method...
