So we will start off with Mike's favorite phrase and just say it sucks.  I get that.  I need to get where and why and what am I missing in my self evaluation.  I am setting up several more sets of plates to practice whatever you guys tell me.Fit-Up: 1/2" Plate, 45 degree combined bevel, 1/4" backer plate (probably a little narrower than test spec), 1/8" root gap TA211iOld 1/8" Excalibur115A root, 120A out, 50% on arc forceThe first rod of each pass was not so great.  The second rod seemed to run better.  I think that was body position which is probably my biggest difficulty right now.Root travel speed was inconsistent at start, got a little better, then went to crap again after the terrible restart.Second pass seemed to go in well other than still struggling with the restart.  Arc strikes were an issue too.First half of cover was terrible.  Bad toes and not enough fill.  Second half seemed to go much better and had great slag removal.Multimatic 200Ellis 1800Haberle S225 9" cold sawMM 300;  Spoolmate 30A w/ WC-24TB 302GDynasty 280 DX Tigrunner
Reply:I'm no expert, but I'd be running stringers after the second pass.   Looks a little wide to weave, especially your cover!Last edited by Advan; 09-12-2014 at 02:41 PM.
Reply:Yes remember the 3 X the rod diameter rule.On your cover pass I'd say you have too fast of travel speed, or need more amps.Don’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400

Reply:Would think the root opening is too small. I believe there will be slag trapped under the bead in places. AWS specifies 1/4 inch root with backing plate. A little more amperage will help the metal flow. Stringers work better in this type weld but if weaving move ahead very small amounts for a tight ripple. Most weave beads recommend 6 X the electrode wire diameter, 3 X for stringer.
Reply:In Canada for cwb our specs for structural is 3/8th plate 30 degree bevel 1/2 gap 1/4  backing plate and two stop starts on root.
Reply:CWB also has one bevel plate and one square. Not both beveled. Your root pass is too cold. Myself, I'd be somewhere in the range of 130 amps for that double beveled 1/8 root gap. Your weave cap is not up to snuff. Stick with stringers for your cap untill you get better at making a nicer looking weave.JasonLincoln Idealarc 250 stick/tigThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52Miller Bobcat 250Torchmate CNC tableThermal Arc Hefty 2Ironworkers Local 720
Reply:Get rid of the backing bar.I don't think you are doing bad at all. You really are the only critic that should concern you and if a guy masters something it is just plain time to move on to something new to suck at.
Reply:droopy; you didn't finish what you started. cut some coupons and bend it up then you can really see how well you did.i.u.o.e. # 15queens, ny and sunny fla

Reply:Dont have one of those either and are you sure it will bend 1/2"?   What is the preferred method for removing the backer?  I could grind it off, but that may take a while.Last edited by Drooopy; 09-29-2014 at 04:21 PM.Multimatic 200Ellis 1800Haberle S225 9" cold sawMM 300;  Spoolmate 30A w/ WC-24TB 302GDynasty 280 DX Tigrunner

Reply:I've bent coupons using the same sort of setup CEP posted. As far as lighting, I know a number of guys who'd keep a small clamp on halogen work light in their bag. Reply:I had great lighting until they put in the exhaust hood.  I have 2 x 4 bulb t5's right above the welding table.  This was my first welding with the hood in the way now.  I will probably just lower the two fixtures to clear the hood, but I want to make sure that doesnt backlight my hood too much.Multimatic 200Ellis 1800Haberle S225 9" cold sawMM 300;  Spoolmate 30A w/ WC-24TB 302GDynasty 280 DX Tigrunner
