Reply:the square tube is 1/8" across, or 1/8" thickness.??? Are you laying it flat on the 1/4" steel plate????   Vertically????   So much missing information it's not even funny. 1st on WeldingWeb to have a scrolling sig! Reply:Stake pocket. Pickup bed stake pocket.  Beware of making too heavy of a tie down for a stake pocket in a modern vehicle. They're made out of tin foil any more. Better off buying a pair of those rubber expandable inserts."The things that will destroy America are prosperity at any price, peace at any price, safety first instead of duty first, the love of soft living and the get rich quick theory of life." -Theodore Roosevelt

Reply:You really don't need to TIG 11ga tubing (1/8 roughly).  Just stick weld it, or wire weld it.  Direct the heat into the 1/4 material, and let the filler wash back into the 1/8 material. This is made using 11ga tubing attached to 3/8 plate.  All stick welded due to the strength requirements.Had the usual WeldingWeb Moron Expert try to tell me this, and the rest of the tie downs I made for this particular trailer, wouldn't be strong enough to meet DOT requirements. So, cause I'm never wrong, and just plain cantankerous, and don't like self proclaimed experts, I decided to do some QCTwas back in the day before cry babies were coddled here"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:And I suppose, while I'm at it  Let's bust another myth..............."6013 can't be used for structural welds"Built that front end loader way-back-when while I still ran a lot of 6013.  Seems to have held up okNow don't get me wrong, there are a lot of things that really do need 7018, but some things do just fine with 60xx filler material. It's my feeling that 90% of the strength in a structure comes from overall design.  Design includes weld joint design too.  You can't expect to hold something together just with a stronger filler material, the joint has to be designed properly too.  It's a sorta Global way of thinking.  The Sum Of The Parts sorta thing."Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/

Reply:That's for sure ,we boomed down a pair of mixer drums on a flat bed one time ,used a BIG cheater bar on the strap winch , The driver had to cut one of the straps to get it off, went like an elastic band "Snap". To be honest I first thought this was a barbecue  tool post .gxbxc

Reply:My bad
Reply:If you are iron deficient stake may be more healthy for you than steak.Seriously, I can't weld out of position with 6013, I make a disgraceful mess. 7018 works better for me vertical or overhead. In theory a piece of 6013 welded steel 1 square inch in cross section should be enough to lift a fully loaded semi trailer. Even 7018 won't lift the tractor too. Better odds of a sound weld would be my reason for choosing 7018, not the 10000 lb difference in theoretical tensile strength. By the way, who decided a MIG weld couldn't be as strong as stick?
