I am wondering if I can use a plasma cutter to cut out panels of 1/4" thick steel from a boat keel. The steel is backed with thick resin. Will a plasma cutter will be able to cut without being able to blow the slag through?
Reply:The short answer is..........................noYou will probasbly melt the resin too.
Reply:Thanks. I don't care about melting the resin. So it won't cut at all or it will just be an uneven cut?
Reply:It will cut it, if you have enough amps, but it will be more like arc gouging. You will likely be better off using zip wheels.
Reply:Thanks. That's what I was afraid of. I have to make two 10' long cuts. Zip wheels will be very slow going through ~0.20" thick steel but I guess that's the only option. I need a nice clean, straight cut.
Reply:A metal saw would be perfect for the job if the resin doesn't gum up the blade, ut a good stick lube would help a lot with that. Plenty of threads here on the various brands. I prefer the Milwaukee, but there are plenty fo others and you can use a straight edge or snap line for a nice clean straight cut. Reply:It is a repair. I was wondering if the old resin would burn. I read somewhere that it won't burn if dry and it is very dry. I don't know what type of resin it is. I'll test it to see if it burns. The resin is thick - the whole inside of the keel is filled with resin around steel plates for weight.
Reply:All great advice! Thank you all very much! I'm going to try and remove the resin first. If that doesn't work I'll use a zip saw. |
