Hi - new to the forum - my first post.my apologies if i'm not in the correct category.I just unboxed my new lincoln 180 mig. installed it next to mylincoln TIG welder - they look pretty together - except the mig doesnt do much other than look pretty.after i took it out of the box- installed the reghose - a fresh 8lb spool of .030 wire. ground wire clamp etc. found a handy place to put that great handheld mask (far under the bench -) i turned it on to to feed wire through to the end of the torch and the feed-motormakes noise, but doesnt turn - the contact is clearly being made (audible click) when you pull the trigger - the wire feed roller doesnt seem to turn (with or without pressure engaged) the power is fine - same outlet as the TIG -( it works just fine thanks ) SO - a new machine off Ebay - shipping it back isnt worth it , but it appears to be DOA for wire feed - any comments on replacing the wire feed mechanism on these ? has anyone experienced similar problems ? all advice, comments, bad jokes greatly appreciated.thanksmarc
Reply:that model comes with 3 different drive roll models and 3 different wire guides. make sure you have the correct ones installed for your wire size and type.(flux core, or mig wire) Once you have checked that then tighten down the tension adjustor down. if you dont have enough tension the wire will not move through the drive rolls. if it moves and you have too much tension then the wire will have a flattened look. also make sure that you have the right polarity for the application. the manual has a set up for both flux core setup and mig wire set up. if you dont have a manual, you should be able to download it from lincoln. hope this helps
Reply:I take it that you turned the wire feed control up and nothing happened. What about voltage from the contact tip to the ground clamp? Hope its not the control board.
Reply:Hello - no - i have'nt checked output voltage - where is it\how that one does that ? i assume between the ground wire and the filler wire ? what should the voltage be at that point ? which of the 4 temperature settings do you recommend trying first ? to answer an earlier comment ;yes this model comes with three different types of drive roller - BUT - irrespective of the type of wire or rollers used - the drive mechanism should turn - mine does not. cheers- marc

Reply:with the tensioner open - the drive wheel doesnt turn - no load\no turn - it's not the gun, you can hear the contactor 'clicking' - with a jumper = same results.
Reply:well- enough emails - i popped the hood - pulled the wire drive assembly off of the welder - and low and behold - the back side of the plastic housing was halved the mount for the electric motor had seperated. plugged it in to the outlet - hit the trigger - the little motor spins nicely - it's drive gear though wasnt connecting and therefor no wire feeding. i needed to pull most of the machine apart to get at the electric motor - cleaned all the plastic - used some devcon plastic aluminium - glued and clamped the lot of it together - tomorrow i'll machine it all clean again and reassemble . should be good to go again . i suspect the damage ma have occured somewhere in shipping ? the original box is pristine .... who knows . anyway - seems like the problem is solved - thanks to all for your comments.cheers, marc
