I was at an equipment auction recently and was looking at the line of ex Cal-Trans rigs when a cone truck caught my eye. The bed is almost perfectly laid out to be used for a welding truck. The welder could sit sideways in the front of the bed, the drop sides could have be seats removed and used for holding the bottles upright, and most already have the tool boxes down the sides for your gear. Of course there are about a million different ways you could lay it out depending on your needs, but it would be one hell of a head start. The best part is, these things usually go for dirt cheap because nobody has any use for them! I would have loved to pick one up and set it up as a second rig, but I do quite a bit of mechanical work and need a lot of tool storage, my F-450 with full utility bed is way too small and packed to the gills as it is. But for someone who sticks to mainly welding, and doesn't need a crane or manlift like I do, could get one hell of a deal on a truck to get going with! |
