Reply:24" 160 is a lot of welding. Just you, or brother in law? TIG root? I see they marked the window for root inspection for you.I hope you got a good brother in law. A bad one can make for a miserable job.

Reply:Looks good. What size rods are you runnin on that? 5/32? Got to ask what it's for  did some 42 double x a few weeks ago  makes for and east day. One fit and turn and burn

Reply:Not sure of imperial sizes, I use 4mm fill, and 3.2 for the cap, for the 24"sch dia, 6" wall pipe we sometimes weld i use 4mm all the way, I'd use 6 (1/4") if they'd let me though36 hours work for one person on the site im on, oncluding all the saftey and QC hoops that we have to jump through.Sent from my LG-P716 using Tapatalk
Reply:6 inch wall? Good lord, better you than me.  You building a power plant? I did some 24 inch - 2 inch wall tube headers on a power plant, with the brother in law from hell.  They had a row of about 6 tubes on each side of the joint about 2 inches from the edge of the bevel. They went from about 10 o'clock to 2 o'clock. You had about 6 inches of room to get your arms in on the top, you had to run the top downhill with TIG, there was no other way to see it. Reach out as far as you could and try to TIG a root down in a 2 inch deep bevel. Some of the most challenging welds I ever had to do, didn't help when my brother in law short armed me on the top and I had to reach over on his side to start.
Reply:Man, I went round and round with that idiot on those welds. He would run his 7018 with a push angle and leave me a big glob of cold lap on top to tie into. I would have to grind it down, and he's telling me the whole time, 'Aw, you can burn that out bro.' I tell him, 'Yeah, what if it don't burn out, what then?' You'd have to gouge down almost 2 inches in a real bad spot just to get to it.' This guy was a nightmare to weld with.He tried to fill one with 5/32 all the while bragging how he was gonna smoke me. X ray showed he left a slag line about 2 feet long. I laughed my *** off, standing down on the ground watching him grind all day.
