I don't do much tig steel, probably 95% aluminum. I have a mig but not comfortable enough with mig to mig it. What I'm trying to do is weld a used spindle into a new piece of galvanized steel pipe for a small trailer. (This thing is never going to see public road usage or anything over 10 mph).I've removed the galvanized coating from the inside and outside of the end of the pipe within an inch of where the weld will be. I've cleaned the spindle to shiny metal where the old weld was. When attempting to weld it, I hear a loud hissing noise with popping and within a couple seconds, the molten steel somehow transfers to the tungsten. I've checked everything I can think of but can find what might be causing it. This is the first one so the other end of the pipe is open still.Anyone have an idea what might be wrong?Campbell Hausfeld Fluxcore 80Thermal Arc 185Millermatic 250JD Squared model 32 bender

Reply:Oil or grease on the spindle? Seems like some sort of contamination problem to me.
Reply:DCEN?Still on AC for alum?
Reply:Gonna try another good cleaning. Definately set to DC for steel.
Reply:Are you using 100 percent argon?
Reply:White fluffy powder around the weld after the arc is off is a sign that there is still zinc where you are welding. You would be able to taste it also.
Reply:This is why I hate TIGing on galv. it's hard to get it clean enough without making the part look all carved down. Also the taste of zinc. SqWave 200Millermatic 190Airco 200 ACHypertherm PM45Boice-Crane Band SawVictor O/A

Reply:Stick weld it. Tig is the wrong process for welding galvanized metals. Tig can't handle the contamination.JasonLincoln Idealarc 250 stick/tigThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52Miller Bobcat 250Torchmate CNC tableThermal Arc Hefty 2Ironworkers Local 720 |
