sa 200 quitting

I just got my old sa 200 running after several years. i had a hell of a time starting it at first. i threw some new plugs and wires on it and a fuel filter. After a little tinkering i got it going, it sounded like crap at first then smoothed right out. it still does this, coughs and then after 20 seconds or so it idles up and smooths out.  Now I am noticing that I am having a pretty hard time starting it each time. Ether usually doesn't help it just kinda starts when it wants. Sometimes it works when I pull the pin out of the vacuum idler.  Now.. when I start welding it bogs down pretty good. It welds for about 5-10 seconds then quits. If i stop welding it coughs and misses a lot but will bring itself back up to idle. I did have it shut off after about 6 minutes of idling and had a hell of a time starting it until it cooled down.  When it runs it runs great and sounds smooth. Good welding power but it kills the motor. Any ideas would be sincerely appreciated! Thanks-Luke

Reply:Do these things have a Choke on them? Sounds kind of like a carburetor problem.

Reply:Originally Posted by RhynoWelcome to the forum-Like mentioned above, it could be a carb problem.  Depending on how old it is, it could be rust that is blocking the fuel tank drain hole.  (To fix it, drain the fuel, and use a shop vac to get all of the rust chunks out.  Make sure it is dry.)  The flow rate of the fuel needs to be checked.  If it flows well, the carb might need to be rebuild.  If that doesn't fix it, the magneto is the next place to look.  Sometimes the internal contacts will get corrosion on them.  It is usually caused by water/moisture on internal parts.I hope that this helps......-Rhyno
