sa-200 I.D. and help

Hey guys I bought a sa-200 today got a steal on it so it needs some work but I am willing just don't have the knowlage I plan to order a manual soon but thought I would start here . It's an sa200-f-163 code8023 sn a-897947 I hope someone can help with that . Also it has 120 on the single d.c. output I ran a drill but it dosent make an arc on the welder side nothing , I looked at the brushes the 2 at 8 oclock when looking at it from the armature end were froze up but I got them free. I dont know when the brushes are bad but they are not cracked and all of them are long enough to stick out of the holders about an 1/8-1/4 of an inch.The contact area is dirty I dont know if that makes a diff or not,I pulled the oil bath off it had fuel in it from the float sticking it also had a wad of dirt the size of a ping pong ball in the catch tray I distroyd the gasket pulling the float boal so I will be wating till one comes in any advise will be greatly apreiciated and I don't haver the dust cover for the main bruashes ? This thing ran oh so smooth before I pulled the float bowl I now understand why these thing's are so sought after.

Reply:From your description I would say the brushes are OK.  They are typically considered serviceable down to a distance of 1/4" from the brush lead.I would start by cleaning the commutator (where the brushes make contact) on the armature with a fine sand paper or commutator stone.  Don't use emery cloth/paper as the emery will get lodged in the commutator and brushes causing premature wear and damage.Seeing as you have power at the auxiliary plug, this confirms the unit is producing exciter voltage and as such the exciter armature doesn't require 'flashing' to re-estgablish residual magnetism.A couple other things to check would be the Coarse Current Selector switch (clean the contact bars) and the Fine Current Control rheostat (clean the wiper and winding contact areas).  If you have a volt/ohm meter you can check the fine current control rheostat with the two wires unhooked.  You should read ~64ohms across the two outer terminals and/or the wiper terminal and each outer terminal with the wiper rotated furthest away from each outer terminal.  If you get ~64ohms and smooth, progressive readings while working the control, it's good.Anything deeper and I would have to recommend following the troubleshooting procedures in the free Weldmart CD.  They can be described but the CD has many illustrations that just makes it easier understand/follow for one not familiar with these machines.MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!
Reply:duaneb55 you are the man I can't tell you how much I appreciate all the help I printed the manual and ordered the disc last night . The head of there tech department is pretty cool I have spoke with him a couple of times and he has been helpful with an sae 400 I was going to buy . I''ll let you know how it's going as I progress where do I find commutator stone's are they an instock item at the average welding supply. Thank's again, Brian
