So, I wanna get better at TIG. I wanna become "The man" at it. I can lay good welds on 5xxx aluminum, stainless, and carbon steel, 1g, 2g, and 3g. My employer has some specialty welder positions for welding inconel, HY 80, HY 100, and some titanium, 5xxx aluminum pipe. These are all welded to US military standards, so all welds must be virtually perfect.  My problem is, how do I take it to the next level? Those metals are very expensive, and you can't just find them anywhere, nor will my company just let me screw around welding a superalloy like inconel. I feel kinda stuck. Any weld drills to get better at TIG or general advice would be great.
Reply:I'm no pro, so take this for a grain of salt. I'm led to believe that stainless steel (non Fe) is similar to inconel and  hastelloy but the puddle is a bit more sluggish.
Reply:Some times you just have to pay to play. If you are a decent tig welder to begin with, and really want to move up to specialty alloys, a dedicated class at some place like Hobart or Lincoln may be worth looking into..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan
Reply:Use the internet like you just have and blow a lot of cash on material and machines.I hate being bi-polar it's awsomeMy Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys
Reply:gweahAsk the 'in-house' welders that do the 'good work' how they: Broke on through to the other side.Be open to all suggestions - especially those that are: outside of mere/pure welding practice.Opus

Reply:You can download a free pdf of MIL-STD-2219 at www.everyspec.com Back in the 80s and early 90s when I was doing quite a bit of production welding on aerospace parts for Military applications it was MIL-STD-1595A.

Reply:Take FieldRes for exampleHe's a little loony, butIf you watch his videos you will see he did what was suggested hereHe took speciality courses at his local trade schoolThen he went and bought supplies, Ti and inconel pipe - a length, an interpas temp and gas monitor Thousands of $ spentthen he practised, then he tested and got the tickets. The reason they are top teir welders is they have speciality knowledge and experience that took time, effort and money to obtain. Also agree, speak with the ones there that have that knowledge, maybe you can get some private training time, some scrap material, maybe your company pays for training...

Outside were the usual assemblage of hangers on, including this 20-something gal who turned out to be his daughter. I was about to go in and she stopped me and said "so you're the best at this, right?" I said "I've done more than a few, if thats what you mean." She went off about how whenever anybody asks you how good you are, you should say I'm better than everybody else. At which point I said "Well, if I have to tell you how good I am, I must not be very good." She looked confused. As Bruce Lee said "If I tell you I'm good, you'll think I'm boasting. If I tell you I'm no good, you'll know I'm lying."

Reply:Following AWS certs. 3G GTAW 3/8" carbon steel D1.1. GMAW 3G Unlimited thickness carbon steel D1.1. GTAW 1g unlimited thickness aluminum D9.1 (Sheet metal code, not sure that's right) GTAW 1g unlimited thickness carbon steel D9.1. FCAW 2g, 3g, 4g to military standard. Anyway, seems the best bet is to find a trade school or something similar to practice welding. So far, nothing found.

Reply:All those certs besides flux core were done in my welding class. I can personally say industry is NOTHING like school. The welding aspect of not being in a controlled environment, welding out of position, in tight spaces really makes the job hard, along with all the procedures and specifications I have to follow. Today I TIG welded for about 7 hours, and it sure is cool to see the improvement.

Reply:I weld on furnace tubes, all kinds of alloys **** i aint never herd of. we have one tube called kabota just like the tractor. its a japanese company that makes its own tubes. Any way i dont do anything different from one alloy to the other. i weld carbon steel the same way i weld Hp, except for the purge. if you can put the bead in carbon u can put it in anything, dont let it intimidate u. the only difference is the purge. set up a carbon coupon and purge it, use a 309 rod
Reply:My real problem as of late is stainless to carbon steel 3g, 2g, and 4g. They look ok, but not good. I can weld aluminum in the positions very well, as well as just carbon steel, but stainless just gives me big trouble.
