Salvaging iron/metals now that my farm is flooded and found an old TRINDL welder. Seems that I read somewhere that certain old welders have one of the above metals in them. Can anyone shed some light on this.....and Thanks !!
Reply:Palladium is used in electronics, good conductivity and doesn't tarnish. Doubt it has platinum, it would have been very expensive machine.Lincoln Power MIG 210 MP ( boat anchor )Lincoln Weld-Pac 100 HDHobart IronMan 230Cutmaster 42Jackson NexGenSumner Ultra ClampsDWM120
Reply:Yeah. Just don't try to use it to fuel a miniature reactor implanted in your chest expecting to be able to power a highly advanced bionic exoskeleton. I'm dying inside.
Reply:i know they recycle the catalytic converters for those metals....Tiger Sales: AHP Distributor www.tigersalesco.comAHP200x; AHP 160ST; MM350P, Spoolmatic 30A; Everlast PowerTig 185; Thermal Dynamics 60i plasma. For Sale: Cobra Mig 250 w/ Push-pull gun. Lincoln Wirematic 250
Reply:Still haven't found which metal those old welders had, but it was a precious metal and probably not real expensive at the time of production. So..........I hate to scrap the things out for the copper value alone. Hate to be ignorant, but it WORKS !! Thanks for the responses.
Reply:Zero reason for any exotic metals except in HF contact points which could contain platinum. It turned up in interesting places like ancient telco switch gear (my Vincent-owning friend replaced his magneto breaker points by silver-soldering in some platinum contacts from a scrapped switch), but those were only about 3/16" diameter.Pics of welder?
Reply:Ok, I took the welder apart (No pic as I scrapped it for iron) but kept what appears to be platinum or something similar to it. Seems like it was a coiled wire like link between some contact points. I melted the metal holders off of it and whatever it is...DIDN'T MELT or even discolor...!! That is how platinum reacts according to what I've read. I'm going to take it to a 95 year old local jeweler tomorrow. If anyone can identify it, I'd think he could. Will let you all know...and thanks! |
