Dimple Die option

Hey guys, I wanted the dimple dies and the hydraulic ram for them. Check out this price out of the Van Saant catalog!Well, I don't have that kind of scratch laying around anymore. So what I did was buy the dimple dies I wanted separately. I got the 1/2, the 3/4 and the 1inch sizes. Unfortunately, the 1/2 inch won't work with the hydraulic feature as it is too small. And I bought this:The hydraulic setup was 99bucks at Harbor Freight. I got the whole kit with a coupon for 74bucks. I only needed the ram. Reply:I did the same thing I bought my dimple dyes from JMR direct, I dont know if there was much of a savings, and I also bought the HF set you bought and use the hand pump with the HF ram and it works out well, I dont recall the sizes but got a decent size set.  hope this helps.
Reply:I;ll 2nd Billybob, I run 2 sets of his dies and you can't go wrong with them for the past year. Flare 1/8" all the time.
Reply:gamble, what I got at Harbor Freight comes with everything you see in the picture. Yep, it comes with the punch and dies for knockouts. I didnt want the knockouts either, I just wanted the ram.Ron, I am too lazy to had pump. Just kidding. I already had the enerpac pump and I already have an enerpac hand pump. No need for the HF setup. Reply:Wow, those are cheap! Nice job on the mix and match. You'll probably recover a good chunk on selling the other parts. For the cost of the others, buy a lathe and make your own! 200amp Air Liquide MIG, Hypertherm Plasma, Harris torches, Optrel helmet, Makita angle grinders, Pre-China Delta chop saw and belt sander, Miller leathers, shop made jigs etc, North- welders backpack.
Reply:I would love to make my own it looks easy as hell. I can go over to MarkBall2's pad and use his mil and lathe pretty much anytime he is home. But he said I need to harden them for them to work. IDK. Reply:Interesting. Why not get tool steel, anneal it, machine it, harden, then temper? Would the heat really distort the piece that much? Like knife making.For a nuke power plant spec's, ok, but for general fab'ing I'd think it be fine. IMHO. What about chucking up in the lathe and carving it with a power tool, say a die grinder clamped into the tool holder?
