Hey guys, as you all know i have been looking at buying my bosses old dialarc, but i found a syncrowave 250 serial # KA910626. He said a friend of his plugged it into his dryer hookup and said the machines running at half power, and might need a relay at the power switch or the bottom? I dont know what that means, but the guy wants $700 for the machine. I could prob talk him down to $600. Whats a relay cost, and im not even sure he knows whats wrong with it, he said he thinks its running on 110, or half power. Pleas lemme know, id like to have this machine over the dialarc. Thanks JoeLast edited by loolagigi; 07-07-2012 at 10:43 AM.
Reply:I don't think that wold even run on 120 voltsif it's plugged into a 220 volt dryer plug then it's on a 220 volt line but not high enough amperage without blowing the breaker if turned up to high outputBacked my CATMA over your CARMA oops clusmy me  What would SATAN do ?? Reply:i offered the guy $300 for the machine since he dosnt know whats wrong with it. fingers crossed!
Reply:Maybe it's configured for 460V input power which means it would be operating at "half power" on a 230V dryer outlet.MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!
Reply:Those machines have jumpers in the back to set the machine for differing voltages. 1st thing I would do is download the manual and pull the rear cover and check the jumpers to see if they are set for 230v. 30 amps is way to low for one of those even at almost the lowest output. I'd run at least 50 amps, probably more depending on what the manual says. 50 amps is borderline ( rated at 60 IIRC) for my Sync 200.That's an older one than the ones at the tech school. Those machines with the digital displays put up an error code when they were wired with the jumpers in the wrong location. ( they'd been wired at stations set up for 230v and were moved to either 208v or 460v stations IIRC)Sync 250's are nice units. I wouldn't mind the extra top end power over my newer Sync 200 for heavier alum. I've run several over the years. $600-700 is a steal on one if it's got all the leads, torch and pedal. A cylinder would be a bonus. Usually I'd expect to see a unit that age in working condition running at least $1500-1800.Edit: I see Duane beat me by just a minute on the 460v thought..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:Looks like the ones I learned on at school... They weld real nice, when they work. If you can fix it up, around here, thats a $1500-$1800 machine on craigslist. Atleast thats what they ask. I think what Duane is suggesting is plausible, even tho I'm no electrician. If you get it working tho, you'll have one reliable machine, those dinosaurs are impossible to kill. Reply:below is a picture of the voltage options from a newer model 250. I could not find a diagram on the manual for my older machine. Would they be the same? My older model and the newer 250's? If so i can use this diagram to see if the machine is set up for 460 instead of 230. If not can you please show me a diagram that i can go by?...thank you.
Reply:Those things need like 75-100 amps on 220 power. I have mine on 460 and it draws like 40-50 amps. On  a standard household plug you would only be able to run it at like half power for long periods of time.
