Minor dilemma.I made this window frame and the sash fit when it was all tacked and up and after welding it's 1/32-1/16 too wide.It needs to slide in and out with minimal play. What's the best way to remedy this? I was thinking I could flap disc the 3/16 ends of the sash but then it would probably be uneven.I was also thinking I could use a 1" belt sander lightly on the frame until it fits. Figured I would ask if there's a better way first.Frame is pretty much dead square so that's not the issue.Attachment 930931Attachment 930941www.FirehouseFabricators.comZachLincoln 210mpLincoln SW200Hypertherm Powermax 45xp2x4 CNC Plasma Table.
Reply:If I had to loose 1/16", I'd throw it on the stationary belt or disk sander or in the mill..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:I always cut a wee bit smaller, easier to fill a wider gap then shrink the finished piece , and no the hot 'hot cycle' on your wife's washer won't do it either..
Reply:How about sand down the inside of the opening it is going into?

Reply:i think maybe il do like DSW said and sand it. I only have a little 1" belt sander but il try... I literally need to take a sliver off.www.FirehouseFabricators.comZachLincoln 210mpLincoln SW200Hypertherm Powermax 45xp2x4 CNC Plasma Table.
Reply:Good excuse for new toys! Push comes to shove, I've used a standard belt sander as a stationary one. Zip tie on the trigger and clamp it down to the bench using a spacer if needed. It's been a while since I needed to do this, so I'd have to look at my belt sander to see what worked the best to do this again. I have a little 4" belt, 6" disk Delta stationary one in the shop for misc prep and that's what I use most of the time. I've looked at a few stationary 6" belt, 8"(?) disk machines but can't justify what the people wanted for something I don't use all that often..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:Frames are straight.I used my 1" belt sander and just slowly went back and forth. It got the job done but I'm a little bummed. For once I thought I finally fit something together flawlessly. Reply:Diablo Flap disks. These guys are twice the cost of other brands of flap disks, but are worth every penny, even if you only use them when you need to take a lot of material off in a hurry. There is a video in the link that's worth watching.http://www.homedepot.com/p/Diablo-St...N01F/202830904Nothing Ever Got Done By Quitting, Never Give Up.
Reply:If it is to fit a wooden framed opening, keep in mind that this is winter.  Might fit after sanding but likely wouldn't open up in summer humidity when the receiving frame swells.30+ yrs Army Infantry & Field Artillery, 25 yrs agoMiller 350LX Tig Runner TA 210, spool gunLincoln 250/250 IdealArcESAB PCM 500i PlasmaKazoo 30"  vert BSKazoo 9x16 horiz BSClausing 12x24 lathe20T Air Press
Reply:It is a fire department training prop. It's being mounted to a cargo container.I got the part to fit but my issue is now when I paint it, it's not gonna fit once again. I think I may spread it a tiny bit like suggested but i worry about throwing it out of square.www.FirehouseFabricators.comZachLincoln 210mpLincoln SW200Hypertherm Powermax 45xp2x4 CNC Plasma Table.
Reply:Just an update.I got it to fit easily but snug. As stated above I am worried when I paint it with spray paint, it will not fit anymore. But I guess I will do the outer frame first, see if I need more grinding on the sash to compensate. If I had to do it again, which I hope I get that opportunity to make more of these, I will make the ends of the sash 1/8" instead of 3/16. It will allow the inside to stay the same length and not mess with the panels that are going into it.www.FirehouseFabricators.comZachLincoln 210mpLincoln SW200Hypertherm Powermax 45xp2x4 CNC Plasma Table.
