I have a Lincoln SP175 Plus Mig and I broke a porta-band 1/2" blade at the weld. Can I reweld these with my mig with any measure of reliability? Any tips for doing this right? Thanks!
Reply:Bandsaw blades are "flash welded" and then ground smooth. I'm not saying you couldn't do it......Lincoln SA200's... at least 15 - 20. They come and go. Growing partial to the "Short Hoods" in my old age. Last count on Short Hoods was 13 in possession.
Reply:i think there is a thread about tigging bandsaw blades if you use search.  I think they mentioned an issue with another process, but I do not remember if it was mig or not.  Search is your friend, srry my memory is incomplete.  You might as well try it though and update this thread to let others profit form your success/failmiller syncrowave 250hobart handler 140home made 400 amp engine driven in progress...
Reply:The problem with mig welding blades is that they tend to be brittle, The right way is to either use a blade welder or to tig them back together. Tig welds tend to be softer and less brittle so the blade wont crack at the weld. The blade welders are pretty much a specialized spot/resistence welder and can be picked up fairly inexpensively if you weld a fair amount of blades
Reply:A portaband has pretty small wheels.  This puts much more bending stress on a blade than a bandsaw with large wheels, so the weld needs to be more flexible.  Band saw blades are usually resistance welded and annealed, but you can TIG weld them, if you anneal afterwards too.But for a DIY process, silver soldering offers the most flexible joint. With MIG, you will spend a great deal of time grinding the weld flush, and the grinding will undercut the metal next to the blade, making it more likely to break again.Anyway, portaband blades are like $20 for a 3 pack.  Why are you fixing this again?
Reply:silver solder is the way to go, anything else is going to require you anneal the blade afterwards, even a blade welder has an annealing process built into the blade welder... you could tig then anneal but silver solder is faster and easier and can last the life of the blade... use high silver content brazing rods and a good flux to properly prepared ends, like 15% silver and a good flux, then you can solder it with even just a propane torch....miller 330a bp TIGmiller dynasty 200DX TIGmillermatic 185 MIGthermal dynamics cutmaster 101 plasma cuttersnap-on YA5550 plasma cutterhypertherm powermax 30 plasma cutterbaileigh CS225 cold sawetc....
