Last weekend when gas welding on some pipe; after shutting off torch, I went over to back of the o2 as it seemed too high, and the hose blew (that's pretty loud btw)..I thought it was an old hose, so I bought a new Hobart hose and hooked it up today. But, when I cracked open the o2 bottle, the lp reg went to 15psi and stopped. (kinda where I'd had it when doing some cutting), any way, the needle would not move no matter what from the 15psi range when going in or out with the valve. So, I've determined the reg. is toast and either the cause of, or the victim of a blown hose. Two questions;1) Anyone blown a hose like that before, and if so did it screw up your regulator? 2) Anyone had a regulator just go bad like that and spike the pressure causing a hose blow out? (it's only 7 years old and has not been moved, aside from changing bottles) Is it worth fixing?(I was a welder on the U.S.S. Enterprise 1980-84, and am now a hobbyist making metal bodied guitars and other things for "therapy" from my 9-5 job)
Reply:Hey Roborob,To answer 1 and 2:1) I've seen a lot of hoses popped, burst, cut, torn... Never experienced hose failure to have an effect on a regulator.(Unless it happened to break the regulator's stem or fitting in a winner-take-all tugOwar )2)Yes, failing regulators can "creep" pressure to hose-bursting levels.2a) Aged hoses can randomly burst, but a 15 psi burst probably wouldn't have popped very loud - so this may be a case of pressure creep.But... It could be just a bad gauge stuck at 15 psi. See if backing out the stem stops gas flow, and if turning the stem in raises pressure and thus flow volume.Good LuckLast edited by denrep; 11-10-2014 at 01:38 AM.
Reply:Backed out the stem until it was just about out, she's a gonner I fear, when it went my neighbors a couple hundred feet away thought I blew myself up...It was very similar to disconnecting a 100psi air hose from a compressor, took about 10-15 seconds to taper off when shutting of the bottle...Eh, new one will be here manana' Gotta love amazon primeLast edited by roborob; 11-10-2014 at 06:19 PM. |
