looking for a vertical band saw to cut exhaust tubing with nothing fancy or super heavy duty this will be for home garage usenot looking to spend a fortune any recommendations are appreciated i would like to stay around $300-$400 or cheaper if possible
Reply:I don't think you'll find a Vert Bandsaw in that price range.Horizontal yes and even then 400.00 is on the cheap side to begin with.Ed Conleyhttp://www.screamingbroccoli.com/MM252MM211 (Sold)Passport Plus & Spool gunLincoln SP135 Plus- (Gone to a good home)Klutch 120v Plasma cutterSO 2020 benderBeer in the fridge

Reply:this milwaukee portaband ,matched with the table from swag off road .might push your budget a little bit but it's definitely a work horse Sent from my ADR6400L using Tapatalk 2 Attached ImagesMiller diversion 165Miller mig 211Hypertherm pm 30Milwaukee 6230 14 inch chop sawMd 45 mag drill (RIP; fell on its head)New MD 45! Reply:yupporta band in the right hands is an art form and the only real option for metal work in that price range IMHOmilwaukee deep throat will do a whole lot of good for a workable price and with some practice the table is not an absolute need (but is a nice upgrade)after that you need to put out real money and get into the commercial stuff, doall, dake, jetbut a grand is gonna be the jumpin' in place and used will be the common thread
Reply:Grizzly, Jet, Delta and Trajan 914 (www.utilitybandsaw.com) brands are economical yet quality vertical band saw machines.
Reply:I heard rumors that Trajan band saws are ideal for metal cutting. I am planning to buy one. I hope I can hear some reviews or comments from Trajan saw users out there!

Reply:I just picked up a jet 14" metal bandsaw, mine is actually a wilton but same exact thing really, the model # on these metal bandaws is #8201 there all made in japan by one company and are sold under several different names really, the most popular is the jet and the grizzly... there are several versions of these metal saws including 3 phase and variable speed which brings it right up close to the $2k mark newthe difference between the $1,400 ish metal version on this saw and the much cheaper wood only versions is that they added a heavier stand and a gearbox to the lower cast iron casting. the gear box is what gives the capability of running everything from very slow all the way up to 3,000 sfpm for wood, plastic and stuff...the cast iron castings of the main body on these saws is pretty good, but most everything else on the saw is pretty cheap and flimsy... the sheet metal covers are flimsy, the wheels are cast aluminum instead of cast iron and the base/stand... well this is there heaviest base and it still very flimsy... to me I'd say these saws are ok at best but to really make them good they could def use some mods and upgrades...I bought mine used and at a reasonable price so I have some room in the budget for mods to bring it up to really nice. I'm replacing the wheels with cast iron wheels from an old 1950's 14" delta bandsaw, going to beef up the stand and swap out to a 3 phase motor with a vfd for even more range and easy adjustment while still having the gear box for those really heavy cuts that need a lot of torque. like I said the cast body itself is pretty good so in the end it should be a decent saw.reason I'm mentioning this here is, if I was on a really tight budget and had to do it all over again I'd get one of the cheapo wood versions of this saw and then modify the motor mount and set it up with step pulleys to reduce the speed and make it usable for metal. I've seen this saw brand new for under $400 (was under the portercable name at lowes) and I think with a little searching you should be able to find a used one in the $200 range... add a few 5/8 shafts and pillow balls and step pulleys and a little welding for a custom stand/motor mount setup and wind up with a fairly decent 14" vertical metal bandsaw for probably around $400 all in. the capabilities of a saw like this will be far greater than the portable one set up on a stand... something to think about if you don't mind building a little bit...miller 330a bp TIGmiller dynasty 200DX TIGmillermatic 185 MIGthermal dynamics cutmaster 101 plasma cuttersnap-on YA5550 plasma cutterhypertherm powermax 30 plasma cutterbaileigh CS225 cold sawetc....

Reply:yeah a used saw is a good way to go. there are so many of them out there that some guy bought to do a wood project or 2 then it sat in the garage for a few years with only a few hours of use... I got mine for about half of the $1,400+ a new one costs...I was really looking for a powermatic like paul's got, I seen a few wood ones but no metal ones anywhere. very hard to find new or used. was then seriously trying to get a wood one and convert it with a vfd setup and pullies but there not so easy to find either. nice ones were gone as fast as they popped up and shipping one half way cross the country killed that thought a bit, it's a 400lb beast. when this one popped up I just grabbed it. after having it I'm not so sorry I chose this one, it's def way more compact than the powermatic and with a few mods will be just as capable.the powermatic is def a heavier unit with a full cast housing and a heavier base, much more mass to absorb the vibrations, but truth is with the right blade and speed setup you can def do some good cutting with this saw too.miller 330a bp TIGmiller dynasty 200DX TIGmillermatic 185 MIGthermal dynamics cutmaster 101 plasma cuttersnap-on YA5550 plasma cutterhypertherm powermax 30 plasma cutterbaileigh CS225 cold sawetc....
