Hey guys,Every chop saw I have used have all utilized a quick release device. You know where you flip the lever up and you can slide the clamp foreward or backward, position your piece, then flip the lever down and tighten the clamp, right? But I always seem to overtighten the clamp and then it just clicks loose. so I end up tightening to less than what I think is proper. My dewalt was clamped up last night cutting some square tubing on a 45. The clamp came loose and just chunked out my brand new 14inch disc. I put it in the 7X12  bandsaw as I didn't have an extra disc. The clamp on the bandsaw on a 45. Again, I crank the wheel down, as it has no quick lever. Again, the wheel spins and I think I am clamping it down snug to german torque specs, you know, Good n Tight? And the dang thing just rolls past tight and is about 2 threads loose.what am I doing wrong? I should not need auxilliary clamps to use the tools as they were designed, so what do you suggest I screwed up?Lincoln Power Mig 210MP MIGLincoln Power Mig 350MP - MIG and Push-PullLincoln TIG 300-300Lincoln Hobby-Weld 110v  Thanks JLAMESCK TIG TORCH, gas diffuser, pyrex cupThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 101My brain

Reply:Joker,With regard to clamping that material at a 45 in your saw, I see no problem with it.  As you may know, the further away from perpendicular (to the blade) you position the piece to be cut, the easier it will be for the blade to try to draw the  material to itself, and out of the clamp.  If I'm running 45s on my little Jet, I sometimes clamp the material to the saw.  Gotta do what you gotta do.-AaronJet 17.5" Drill Press1942 South Bend 16x84 Lathe1980s Miller 320A / BP --- 2013 Power Mig 2562012 Jet 7x12 Horizontal BandsawVictor O/A Setup
Reply:When I cut at a 45 I clamp the metal to the fence, then just slightly tighten the regular clamp. Works great. But I've never actually had the problem that joker11 is talkin about http://www.philswelding.com
Reply:On 45's I use a 8" C-clamp to clamp the material to the deck, then tighten the main clamp.  Doesn't slip then.  Mine is a Clark 4x6 I bought new from Tractor Supply years ago.Hector, look at the threads, sounds like the threads are stripped on the handle.MarkI haven't always been a nurse........Craftsman 12"x36" LatheEnco G-30B MillHobart Handler 175Lincoln WeldandPower 225 AC/DC G-7 CV/CCAdd a Foot Pedal to a Harbor Freight Chicago Electric 165A DC TIG PapaLion's Gate Build

Reply:Joker11  -  I've used and abused consumer hot-saws since they were introduced over 30 years ago.  I regularly use them clamped vertically, and even over-head, because I remove the saw from the base, and build my own clamping mechanisms.  The first thing I do is remove all of the ancillary safety guards; I do this because you cannot see what you are doing.  I replace with superior safety precautions.   There are saws with cast-bases [don't buy one], most are stamped steel, and ironically, the better quality saws have your problem - vise flex.  The more you tighten the vise, the more the stamped steel bed flexes, and in-turn splays the vise jaws [slipage], thus allowing the cut piece to plunge into the blade.  Everytime I cut an angle in a consumer hot-saw, I Vise-Grip the piece to the fence. If you you don't have a grip that will do this, you need more Vise-Grips.This is the bakers secret that will keep your cake from falling. You have the saw feed in one hand, and in the other, you hold a piece of flat bar leverging the deflecting side of the blade.  This action "collars [holds]" the blade true when introduced to the cut.  Once you are through the corner or tangent , you can cease the leverage, your cut will be true, and your trauma history.       Opusp.s.  This also applies to bandsaws and coldsaws.Last edited by OPUS FERRO; 07-24-2012 at 02:08 AM.Reason: Clearification
Reply:It also helps if you use some sticky back sandpaper on the faces of the vice. It really helps with the slippage of the work. I also will use an extra vicegrip type clamp to hold the work even then.
Reply:Vice Grips or C clamps are your friends. Also read Vern's thread on how he fixed his clamp.  Pretty ingenious if ya ask me.MarkI haven't always been a nurse........Craftsman 12"x36" LatheEnco G-30B MillHobart Handler 175Lincoln WeldandPower 225 AC/DC G-7 CV/CCAdd a Foot Pedal to a Harbor Freight Chicago Electric 165A DC TIG PapaLion's Gate Build
