180 amp stick

I am looking at getting a 180 amp Lincoln stick welder how much do you think i should offer for it its an older model. he wants $180 but i think its a little high. i don't mind it just being a buzz box i got to teach myself to weld with stick so if i wanna upgrade i can always do that.2-Lincoln idealarc 250/250, lincoln 225 ac/dc welder, lincweld ac 180c, hobart handler 210, hobart stickmate lx 235/160, Hypertherm Powermax30local 26 I.B.E.W Electrician
Reply:If this is an AC/DC machine $180 is not that bad a price. The plain AC ones used usually run $50-125 depending on condition. I'm guessing it's DC since most straight AC ones are 225 amp machines.I'd probably offer $150 and see what he'd say, but give $180 for it if it was in decent shape. If it is a DC machine I'd be willing to bet you could probably easily get most if not all your money back selling it again if you chose to upgrade inthe future..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:Now that I can see what it actually is, I'd agree $180 is on the high side for what I've seen in my area/ I saw a 225AC machine for that price last week and thought the guy was nuts at that price for an older machine thats seen better days.I regularly see the 225AC machines on CL averaging $100. I don't look that far south, so I can't honestly say what prices in your area run on average. I'd offer less and see what he says. If he was firm, I'd probably walk away and keep looking myself. Heck for twice that price, Steve, 7A749 here has that monster 330A/BP up for sale. You'd need a lot more amps input, but the machine would run Ac and DC stick to something like 300 amps and be tig capable as well. Not sure what shipping would add, but he could probably give you a decent estimate. Reply:also found it it is much older then I thought. the inside wiring diagram says 1959. Reply:Hi,     I was given the same unit,180ac,  many years ago and it worked great. Now it won't work under 115. There is a wire not connected in back of the unit and I don't know where it goes. Could you take a picture of the wiring diagram on the inside of the back cover for me and post it? The mice have eaten mine off.Thanks Bruce
Reply:If that welder does not have a fan, it is a copper wound transformer.Brush clean the switch contacts and put a little oil on the detent.You can still get the line switch and the range switch from Lincoln.If you need a diagram for any Lincoln welder. Call them with your code number and they will send you one. Fax or e-mail should be free. You can down load the owners manual from lincolnelectric.com . For free. Some of the owners manuals have general diagrams.
