As stated at some point in my rambling, one of the things that I used to do for a living was ornamental iron (and aluminum). I never really started taking pictures of anything that I did until I started doing ornamental. Most of these pics were all taken 15+ years ago by disposable cameras and Polaroids with the intention of eventually doing my own thing. Well, I just didn't have the means to get started at the time, I was too young and instant gratification took too long, so I decided to go to school for electronics, computers, etc. I am REALLY grateful to have been able to recently bring welding and fabrication back into my life.I have been meaning to scan a few pics for years, so I finally did a few this evening..Some commercial stuff:Attachment 933971Attachment 933981Attachment 933991Attachment 934001

Reply:Some scroll stuff:This house was built early 1900's. They did an addition on the rear and wanted the scroll designs in the rails to match existing scroll work in their brick fence that surrounded the house. I made the scrolls from a charcoal transfer off of the existing scroll design. I made the scrolls from 1-1/2"x3/8" flat stock and a hell of a lot of OA. The pickets were 3/4" with a quarter turn. HEAVY rail sections..Attachment 934041A decent sized driveway gate:Attachment 934051Misc residential jobs:Attachment 934061Attachment 934071

Jacuzzi room at lower level, take the staircase up to the top room for some billiards fun:Attachment 934151Attachment 934161This guy also had it coming out of his arse. Basement wine cellar enclosure. Picture taken from adjacent commercial grade kitchen.. uugh.Attachment 934181
Reply:An interesting church job:One of these guys is Niche in his earlier days.Attachment 934191An a couple of personal jobs..A motorcycle carrier before motorcycle carrier were cool:Attachment 934201A bed frame that I made for my wife and I while we were still dating and living in the hood. This frame still gets much use today 17yrs later.. Attachment 934211Don't really have any pics this evening of the aluminum wood look rails, but it was all spool gun mig, not much difference than a standard wood look from a distance.Last edited by NicheFab; 12-10-2014 at 11:16 PM.

Reply:Nichefab ; some thing you said rang a bell ,did you ever work for Fred P?
Reply:Impressive.  Really like the big entry gates.
Reply:Thanks for the kind words guys. I get MUCH gratification out of making stuff "as do you all", and I am stoked to have brought fab back into my life. The Internet's penetration was all but non-existent to the masses back then, and I was a young punk, "still am".. but sites like this made me realize a good while back that I have a LOT to learn, no matter what the interest. Hack of many trades, master of none..Rob - Sure, I would be glad to show/discuss what I can. I will admit up front that a lot was stone age geometry methods done on 10'x15' ish table. It involved me crawling around with soap stone, tape and straight edge in hand in attempt to do full scale layouts for what I would consider the nonstandard stuff. Had some jigs and angle fences set up for the standard stuff. Anything specific?gxbxc - I "might" remember a Fred. Ashland area?-Niche
Reply:Always interested to see how you set up a jig.  Regards,RobGreat Basin WeldingInstagramBlue weldersRed weldersMy luscious Table DIY TIG Torch cooler
Reply:Rob, I would be glad to. I can describe some of my methodology and maybe do a standard layout that "I" would typically do. Some of the jigs that I built would have to be drawn out, as they stayed with the shop when I left. I have a chinese bender now!!  No, but really.. for instance the curved rails were literally curved with a sledge hammer and top cap formed with a rosebud and MANY clamps (not the monkey tails, those were weld on cast from Julius Blum).  I could detail something like that as well if interested. It might be a bit, and might be incremental, but I could jot some stuff down both in pencil and soapstone that details my approach. I would be very interested in how other who do ornamental iron handle these types of jobs as well (along with any critique of my notes or methods), from measurement to installation.-Niche

Reply:Take some pics next time. I know there are a million ways to skin a handrail, but it would be cool to see one getting built.Regards,RobGreat Basin WeldingInstagramBlue weldersRed weldersMy luscious Table DIY TIG Torch cooler

Reply:I also would be very interestend your system. I have done over a dozen sets in the last couple years and dread every single one, until the last 2 I've done. I have finally started to develop my own system that seems to work reasonably well. I would definitely like to learn more from someone with your level of experience!!These are the last two I did. Quick and simple ones. NOTHING compared to the work you do, but these two time were critical on. I told them I could get them done by the time they needed them but they couldn't be anything too fancy since I was only getting a couple days!-DoogieMiller 350PMiller Trailblazer 325 EFI w/ Excel PowerLincoln LN25 suitcase welderXMT 304/22a feederMiller Syncrowave 350LXMiller EconotigHobart Handler 140(2) Uni-Hydro 42-14Hypertherm 65 plasmaWEBB Gap bed lathe
Reply:Hey there Doogie, those rails look good to me. The biggest thing is that everything stays perpendicular, parallel and plumb, cause there are so many intersecting lines between the rails and existing structure. It can stand out like a sore thumb if not right, and it looks like you nailed it. Knowing this, we tend to be our own worst critics. The first picture.. were the feet welded in the shop or upon install? I could do a mini-layout (my table is small) to show how I would approach that stair profile.-Niche

Reply:Nothing ornate about any of that. Not even the parts purchased from a catalog and assembled.

Maybe the post should have been called geometric safety structures with a couple of scrolls and hoops here and there. I'll try better next time. -Niche
