I need to clean the inside of 12 joints of 1 1/2" square tubing well enough that it will rust. I also want the outside to rust, so degreasing both at the same time would be nice. Before you ask, the rust makes my sealant adhere better for two reasons: 1) rust indicates the surface is/was oil free and 2) creates a rough surface that helps with mechanical grip.I use a two-part polyurea sealant (same general material as a sprayed-on bedliner) to prime raw steel whenever possible. I want to coat the inside of the tube to prevent/minimize rusting from the inside out.I could probably rig up a pump and circulate a detergent through each joint...Any thoughts??
Reply:Steam. I have a Delco pressure washer that will also produce wet steam, works wonders for cleaning that oily tubing on the outside. Should work on the inside too.
Reply:I'm not set up for steam - in any way, shape, or form. I wish I was A hot pressure washer is about a hundred times more effective than cold, and (I suspect) steam is that much more effective than hot water.

Reply:Full a bucket with Super Clean or another degreaser. If you only need to clean a little ways into the tube, grab a bottle brush and swab 'er good. If you need to do a whole length, soak a rag real good in the degreaser, stuff it in the tube and shove it down. Rinse with water after.

Reply:Soak in vinegar. It's a mild acid. Rinse with water and wait, it'll rust.Eventual master of the obvious, practitioner of "stream of consciousness fabrication". P.S. I edit almost every post because because I'm posting from my phone and my fingers sometimes move faster than my brain. |
