Keeping the rod in the gas stream?

Seems like it would take a big cup to keep the soot off the end of the filler rod what do you guys do about it?
Reply:No, it doesn't.  There must be something off in your system as a whole, as even myself as a newbie can keep filler rod ends clean with normal size cups.  Perhaps what you're describing/thinking is "soot" isn't really soot, but you think it is.  I find it difficult to believe this even merits a discussion .  Can you please post an actual picture of your sooted filler rod? 1st on WeldingWeb to have a scrolling sig! Reply:If you are getting soot when doingTIG, there is something that is causing it.   The only times I've seen soot when welding aluminum is:a) When I've used the wrong gas (c75 leaves sooty marks)b) When I forgot to clean the sticker from the back of the bar of aluminumc) When I've used DC instead of AC.I do keep the end of the filler close to the cup but not so close that it melts.  Dan----------------------------Measure twice.  Weld once.  Grind to size.MIG:  Lincoln SP100 TIG/STICK:  AHP Alphatig 200X

Reply:Keep rod in gas stream during weld, and during post flow. If you welds stays clean, so will your rod.
