After a rather lengthy session of plasma cutting an old boiler, l noticed my normally white beard appeared several shades darker. The beard is about 10 inches long so alot of it is exposed when wearing a welding hood. Any thoughts on whether this is u/v exposure related? Should l install a mudflap on the bottom of my hood?Eventual master of the obvious, practitioner of "stream of consciousness fabrication". P.S. Reply:It's probably just dirty from all the particulate in the smoke off the plasma cutting process. Does it wash out? I'd recommend installing a "mud flap" just on general principle. I've had them on my hoods for so long I just can't really picture using a hood with out one. Just replaced the one on one of my hoods not to long back. IMO, pop riveting them on is the best way to go.
Reply:I would think it would get lighter from UV exposure- just like hair does out in the sun during the summer.Could it be metal dust making it darker?Ed Conleyhttp://www.screamingbroccoli.com/MM252MM211 (Sold)Passport Plus & Spool gunLincoln SP135 Plus- (Gone to a good home)Klutch 120v Plasma cutterSO 2020 benderBeer in the fridge
Reply:I'd bet it's just dust and particulate matter darkening it. Mine is naturally red and by the end of the day I can tell it's significantly darker from grinding dust and touching it with my dirty hands.
Reply:It does seem to be getting better. This was a nasty old boiler that had been in service since 1952 so there is merit to the dirt theory. I cut it up Saturday and didn't notice any improvement after my shower but as the days go by it is getting better.Eventual master of the obvious, practitioner of "stream of consciousness fabrication". Reply:My little brother, now retired, had a full long beard his entire welding career (1972 to 2012). He couldn't tell you how many beard fires he had. Says the smell of burning hair is not so great.
