i picked the 3 welders up from the local high school. my boy called from school and asked if i wanted to buy another welder. i figured it was worth a look. bought all 3 as is for $100 each. i figured the salvage would be worth that much. i took them back to my shop and plugged them in and they all powered up. i didn't have leads with the miller plugs so i made a set up and tried burning rods with them. all 3 welded sweet on both ranges with 3/32" and 1/8" 7018 on dc side. i haven't tried ac yet. i haven't tried out the HF yet either. (gota download a manual) or the victor flow meter it came with. i opened all 3 up and was surprised that they were only lightly dusty inside. used a soft paint brush and air and they look pretty good inside now. i for sure am going to keep the black faced one as it is the newest and lightly used. it also came with a 50' #6 power cord attached which i cut down to a 10 footer and made a 40' extension cord from what was left. the pics were taken before i did any work to them. the day after i got the welders a friend came by the shop and asked if i would haul a ford bronco 2 up to his place in the hills with the 2 axle trailer i just finished rebuilding and i thought it would be a good test run for it. after we unloaded it he asked if i would be interested in buying an old drill press. the Buffalo no.18 in the pics and all the bits(58, 1/4" thru 1 1/8") and a box of what i have no clue are is what he had. when i asked how much his answer was free. i haven't got it off the skid yet so i'm hoping the spec plate is still attached on the downside. what little online info i could dig up is they made both single and 3 phase models. the moving parts that i can check while on the skid seem to be pretty good. the place he got it from said it works great but they had no use for it anymore. my buddy never took it off the skid he picked it up on. i hope to find time in the next few days to check it out. do any of you guys know what those critters are in the box? Reply:Well I'll go first with WHAT A FRIEND you have, if you went out and paid for the drills you would need some big money to get all of them.the parts in the box are a mix of lathe collets ( the ones with threads on the outside end) , the ones with a hole though the side are Jacobs taper shanks. You use a Jacobs taper key to remove the drill from the holder, or the key chuck from the drill press so you can use the taper shank drills.FWIW I looked up a 1 1/8 taper shank drill bit @ Fastenal and it would be $100.00 each + tax.Next time you see your friend may give him a big kiss or jest a big thank you again

Reply:OK, OK, enough of the "Tool Gloat"! I give up! AND to think folks call me a bottom feeder? In the language of OWWM and "arn addicts" everywhere that deserves a great BIG "YOU SUCK!" (actually a compliment on a steal of a deal). The welders are well worth the money as a Thunderbolt 225V will bring around 150-175 bucks around here. The drill press appears to be a Model 18 Buffalo Forge 18" Floor model of what I am guessing to be a late 1940s to early 1950s DOM. You can ID the machine by the cast in number below the "Buffalo" logo cast into the head. The inclusion of the table raising screw is an advantage as the table weighs enough to induce hernias without it.With a bit of work the drill press should be back up and running just fine. I might suggest checking in at http://www.owwm.org/ and do some research on the DP. There are several folks there familiar with rebuilding those and they should be able to answer any questions.Just a bit of light reading. I did find a couple of manuals for that model.1957 Buffalo No. 18 Drill Press - Maintenance Manual and Spare Parts Catalog http://vintagemachinery.org/pubs/detail.aspx?id=25431968 Owners manual and parts listhttp://vintagemachinery.org/pubs/detail.aspx?id=2537YEP, "YOU SUCK"! Reply:How do you sleep at night ???????? Great job ! Now go back to the school and see what else they MAYBE disposing of in the future. Might find out what the instructor like to drink ora gift certificate could help later.
Reply:That is one heck of a score. Make sure your boy gets a chunk of the reward (encourage him to repeat this behavior). If you don't want to stand behind our Troops, feel free to stand in front of them.
Reply:i thought the parts in the box (collets) had something to do with a mill or a lathe but wasn't sure. thanks for the conformation Steelsmith and Tool Maker. thanks for the links to the manuals Rog01 they are downloaded. good info. when i stand the DP up and get the number from the casting i will run a make on it. BD1, i already told the instructor if they need to unload more equipment give me a call. my boy will also no doubt get more of a chunk than he normally extracts from me SWells lol. after all he is 17 and building his first rock crawler. the kid is a darn good welder and wants to go through the 2yr JC program then dive school. he took first and second in his category for 2 ag implements ( a hydraulic tow dolly for trailers and a 16' spring tooth harrow) he built at state this year.225NT bobcatAEAD200LEScott 125mm175, mm252 w 30A, PT225mm211, TA 181iHyper Therm 380, cut master 529100X & XX, Digital Elite6 Victor setssmith little torch, meco midget kalamazoo band sawsteel max saw evoulution circular saw |
