Is there a dividing head that will accomadate the 16c collets? I want to mill some things that have a 1 1/2" shank and I need to be able to index it.Last edited by Brianstick; 09-22-2012 at 11:29 PM.
Reply:Hi, I have seen an indexer on Ebay that uses 5C collets....I haven't seen a dividing head that has that, all of them that I have used had Morse tapers in the spindle.I have seen a 5C adaptor to take 5C collets that you can hold in the chuck in a dividing head....also on Ebay, so you might be lucky with 16C.Ian.
Reply:Not a lot of indexers / rotary tables that use larger collets. Might be better off with an indexer/rotary table that uses a chuck...Andrew
Reply:Most dividing heads I have seen have a B&S taper, usually 7,9 or 10(?). both of mine are 9's.  Indexers usually have a set number of divisions like 24, 36, etc. and most do use the 5C. IMHO, a good 4 jaw on a semi universal dividing head is capable of an endless solutions. But they require a bit more grey matter usage than an indexer.
Reply:I've already got a set of 16c collots, just no dividing head for them.
Reply:Hi, have you ever considered that a collet is dedicated for a certain specific size and can't be made to clamp a size almost near to it?The ER collet system used in milling chucks etc can close down 1mm between sizes.A dividing head, like the Sears BS-1 type in the USA would probably set you back about $600 US, and a chuck about $200 US.In the absence of a16C  collet adaptor for the 'head, ( if there is one) a chuck would not break the bank.....you'd only be paying the difference between the collet adaptor and a chuck. You wouldn't get a material size more than about 1" through the dividing head spindle anyway, so 16C collets will not be a solution for long shafts, only short onesOne of the big problems with a dividing head holding device if it's a collet or 3 jaw chuck is the runout that for gear cutting is totally unacceptable......making a 4 jaw chuck the way to go.The worst you could do is to make or get made an adaptor with a bore and taper to suit the 16C collet and have it made to screw onto the div head spindle nose, but to get it made, hardened and ground as a special order would cost several times more than any chuck, and if it ran out as little as .02mm (.001") you will be stuffed for acuracy. In that case you could get the adaptor made with a flange to bolt onto a backplate like a chuck and make the register slack so you can slacken the bolts and move it to make it run perfectly true.Ian.
