Just got an old weldanpower 150. Engine is running well but the machine is not making electric. What should I do to begin diagnostics? Should i take the welder to a shop to be repaired? Thanks,John
Reply:First things first. Welcome to the forum John. How is your electrical knowledge? The Weldanpower 150 is a simple machine and easy to troubleshoot with some basic equipment. You'll need the manual http://content.lincolnelectric.com//...r/im/IM287.pdf if you don't have it to follow along. I believe this is the only one for the150 but to confirm, what is your units code# at the base of the faceplate?DuaneMM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!
Reply:Thanks for the welcome and thanks for the help! code is 79 79. I feel comfortable enough with electric to wire a house but am a bit foggy with some of the jargon associated with electric motors. For instance where do I probe to check resistance accriss the windings? Thanks again,John
Reply:A bit more figured out... I checked voltage at the flash circuit per the manual troubleshoot guide. I have 2.68vdc at high idle which is within specs of 1.5 - 4 vdc. Now what!?Thanks all,John
Reply:OK, you have the Kohler engine rather than the B&S like mine but everything else is the same from here on.I've only got a few minutes until I have to take off so check the following next:1) Do you know how to check a diode? If so, check the flashing diode for an open condition.2) Check the brushes to make sure they're free. Should fit loosely in the brush holders. If stuck, remove the holders to get everything freed up and clean. If you have a digital camera take a close up so you'll have a record of how it needs to go back together if you don't remember how.3) Clean the commutator (slip rings) with a 120-180 sand paper (with brushes removed). Lightly clean the end of the brushes as well but don't get carried away.4) Check for continuity between the two slip rings (with brushes removed).5) Check for shorts to ground from each slip ring.6) Reinstall brushes and confirm continuity between each before connecting anything back up. this will confirm proper contact to the slip rings.7) If you know how to check a diode, check the diode rectifier with the four wires unhooked.8) If all checks out hook it all back up and try it.If that doesn't do it you'll have to run some checks on the stator and capacitors which isn't too hard but I have to head out. I'll have internet access again tonight so I'll check back in then to see how things are going.DuaneMM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!
Reply:Duane, you're the best. I will do my best to muddle through all of that. A further update- I ran down to my neighbors and borrowed his leads to find I get sparks- very mild not nearly enough to weld but definitely some electric moving around- hope this info is helpful and further bodes well for me!Thanks again,John
Reply:I know this is an old thread, but what's the value of a used 80's Weldanpower 150?There's one locally for about $150, ad says engine runs, but generator/welder needs a bit of work. No idea what that means. I have been reading up on them a bit, figure most it might need brushes or a diode or two. Haven't looked at it, cause I figure I would ask the experts (Duane, ya listening????) first.Pictures don't show any leads, so I would have to purchase those as well, but I would worry about that a bit later.MarkI haven't always been a nurse........Craftsman 12"x36" LatheEnco G-30B MillHobart Handler 175Lincoln WeldandPower 225 AC/DC G-7 CV/CCAdd a Foot Pedal to a Harbor Freight Chicago Electric 165A DC TIG PapaLion's Gate Build

Reply:That's what I wanted to hear. A range of prices.Don't have any idea what's wrong with it, but from my reading, it should be a fairly simple fix......... unless the windings are shorted.MarkI haven't always been a nurse........Craftsman 12"x36" LatheEnco G-30B MillHobart Handler 175Lincoln WeldandPower 225 AC/DC G-7 CV/CCAdd a Foot Pedal to a Harbor Freight Chicago Electric 165A DC TIG PapaLion's Gate Build

Reply:I have a weldanpower AC-150/4.5-AS Code 8680 Serial A10176xx and the alternator is bad.The Briggs & Stratton parts break down shows that the alternator is Part # 391595 for this engine type number which is listed as a AC ONLY unit . However, Lincoln states that the voltage for a Briggs and Stratton engine is 12-14 volts DC when testing the Flashing Circuit which is feed by the alternator. My question is perhaps for this unit the correct part would be Part # 391529 which is listed as a DC ONLY unit .
Reply:AC only is the correct stator as the flashing diode in the welder is what converts the AC engine alternator output to DC for the rotor flashing voltage. If you have or can get a DC only output replacement (new or used) that will work just fine as well.Where are you located? If you can't find one, I have an AC only output left over from an electric start conversion that I'm sure we can work something out on. Or, if you're up for the easy challenge, you can re-wind the one you have if the frame isn't damaged.MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!

Reply:I sold mine when I found the larger W&P 225 ac/dc to offset the $ some. I got my fair share of projects so I decided, to let someone else have some fun too I wonder if it is the same one? I could tell by looking at it. mine almost wanted to weld If we'd a stuck to it I suppose we'd have found the problem. Reply:Actually Bret, for a stick welder, I'm looking for one in the 250A range. Preferably AC/DC & engine run. I'm hoping I get a deal like I did on the lathe.MarkI haven't always been a nurse........Craftsman 12"x36" LatheEnco G-30B MillHobart Handler 175Lincoln WeldandPower 225 AC/DC G-7 CV/CCAdd a Foot Pedal to a Harbor Freight Chicago Electric 165A DC TIG PapaLion's Gate Build
Reply:I kinda' went thru that too, I didn't know much about them really but the more I read the more I figured I wanted DC and a li'l more juice... so when the chance came to upgrade to a bigger working one I did. I think I know where there is working but needs TLC Miller, model ? I dunno but something similar so we might go find that guy and see if he'd let it go for low $. Duane will be able to ID it if needed. Miller I got no clue?Lincoln Power MIG 215Lincoln WeldPak 3200HDLincon ProCut 25Lincoln WeldanPower 225 AC/DCIf all else fails... buy more tools |
