I have a friend that got a bunch of tool steel for cheap and used it for his log splitter and it keeps busting. He didn't preheat or post heat and MIG welded it. I have no idea what it is, AR plate or something even harder. Some said to use 309 stainless as a filler rod,  some said 7018,any opinions.
Reply:no, use 312 stainless filler.[/thread]Welding/Fab Pics: www.UtahWeld.com
Reply:312 stainless will work, we have used Amtec 264 and Harris SuperMissileWeld. Both of the later are just stainless in pretty boxes. Preheat is helpful on thick stuff.Ranger 250 GXTSmith Gas Axe

Reply:Tool steel is just that, tool steel.  It is not wear plate. Tool steel is not the material to use on a log splitter. It just doesn't have the properties to hold up for that application. You can get specific rod for welding tool steel but it is going to cost a bunch. You can weld it up over and over but for a log splitter application, it is just going to continue to break. Poor choice of material for a log splitter.JasonLincoln Idealarc 250 stick/tigThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52Miller Bobcat 250Torchmate CNC tableThermal Arc Hefty 2Ironworkers Local 720

Reply:just curious and for the sake of argument on the op's behalf, why would tool steel be a poor choice?i carry a pocket-knife made of a tool steel (d2) and it works great! i split all kinds of stuff with it!granted i dont want to weld on it, but if i had a chunk of it laying around and wanted a log splitter, i would be mighty tempted to use it!309 would be my first guessbosses stuff:trailblazer 325maxstar 200my stuff:sa 200fronius transpocket 180100 amp Lincoln w/f97 f350 DITKevin

Reply:There are several different grades of tool steel. Tool steel has some specific characteristics. It is very hard, it is tough and it resists wear. Tool steel differs from mild steel in that it has poor elasticity and elongation characteristics. It can be very brittle. When welding tool steel you have to be careful. You want to use the lowest current and smallest electrode possible to help minimize heat input into the material. Preheating and a slow cool is a good idea.JasonLincoln Idealarc 250 stick/tigThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52Miller Bobcat 250Torchmate CNC tableThermal Arc Hefty 2Ironworkers Local 720
Reply:welded this with 309 tig filler rod. And I tiged it. Welded really good puddled really easy to. Not sure how much different stick welding would be. And I don't see why you couldn't use tool steel for log splitting.
Reply:This is a diesel 1.375 inch wrist pin btw. I'm gona buy some er312 super missle rod on line for like 18 bucks a pound. Ill let you know how that does. No one stocks it. Not even any airgas or matheson gas
Reply:309 is not at all designed to be used for this type of thing by the way, it's for something entirely different, that's why a crack is visible on the right in the top picture posted just above.312 is; it's an austenitic-ferritic mix designed for joining hardened and dissimilar steels, it doesn't crack. 312 is far superior for this application.Last edited by MikeGyver; 12-14-2014 at 12:37 AM.Welding/Fab Pics: www.UtahWeld.com
Reply:That because I let of to fast. 309 is for joining dissimilar metals I'd say that's what this is
Reply:You can see where I stopped before the weave and no crack because I keep it puddled for a little bit. Im gona get 312 but 309 does work. You got some good eyes!
Reply:Its a hot crack, it happens when you try to fuse 2 different types of steel, usually hardened to not or 2 different crystalline types of steels. Since they re-crystalize at different rates a stress crack down the center is very prone to forming. 309 is just highly concentrated stainless filler designed mainly to dilute and join mild steel to stainless and even joining some different types of stainless. 312 is literally designed to magically join different crystalline types of steels. Those cracks simply do not form in the first place with 312 even if you don't employ little tricks to try and get it not to (visibly) crack. The weld is still riddled with micro-cracks and will readily form failure cracks once it's stressed in service. You don't have to take my word for it, do some hardcore research on manufacturers publications (not online forum hearsay) and then try it for yourself. you can get a pound of 312 filler on ebay for like $20Last edited by MikeGyver; 12-14-2014 at 01:10 AM.Welding/Fab Pics: www.UtahWeld.com
Reply:I bought some ER110S1 a few months back. I've used it for repairing large sockets and wrenches that broke or cracked. Most recently, I repaired a feed gear on a core drill carriage. all repairs are still holding strong and withstanding abuse. Whatever you decide to use, strength and ductility is what you should be looking for. Also I tigged these items together, which in my opinion is the way to go. You may want to consider what will break next if the weld does hold, just a thought.Thermal arc 211iCk flex-loc 150 & 130Clamps, saws & grindersHarbor freight 80 amp inverter

Reply:Why not just build a wedge out of mild steel, and be done with it.  Attached ImagesDon’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
