I don't post much of my work simply because i either don't have time or i don't feel like it But i do take before and sometimes durning and the after pics..Anyone who does this for a business and does not is a fool considering the current sue everyone way it's done now First this is being done for the outfit i work for i operate their equipment and weld it also This D6R is a recent auction buy...Some people (they shall remain nameless ) should hire a equipment survey person BEFORE they buy equipment or at least go look at it before they buycommon sense dictates if it's at an auction it has issues 98% of the time at least ...Another thing to keep in mind that any company that is having finance problems always cuts the maintenance first ...the folks in the office almost never see a budget cut until it all goes belly up On to the subject......But first a shameless glory shot   The foreman calls me and says the blade of the D6R needs reinforcement ...i have run that machine and have installed the mounts for the GPS computer system that is getting put on itas a rule D6 dozers are kept light as possible because they are used to finishing, sloping and general dozing and push mud in the water so i am not getting it ...I have welded on AR steel liners but mostly on D8 and bigger...Finally he gets there and points out the problem...The Bull arm is cracked . (but i'm working for a equipment foreman that doesn't know the difference between the blade and the bull arm )..and o gee someone already has welded it up once  And the always famous line: "I need it Monday"...It's Friday Afternoon a little after 3:00 PMThis never failsOh and i didn't look to closely at it at the time because it was sitting in a mud puddle...it had rained and snowed there over New Yearspics were taken on Saturday morning when i startedWhen It got more complicated ...I found out why it crackedThis was taken after i air chiseled out ...Some of the mud and dirt packed up in the arm itself so i measured beyond the beginning of the problem and air arced it all out1/2 inch steel bottom piece of the arm was less than 1/4 thickLast edited by killdozerd11; 01-06-2015 at 07:52 PM.Backed my CATMA over your CARMA oops clusmy me  What would SATAN do ?? Reply:As a rule a box structure needs all 4 parts to work properly and be strong 3 and 3/4 don't cut itThe right side on a slope cat always gets the most abuse because the slope board (on this one ...some are mounted on the right side but very few )  is always in the way when gouging or benching Oh the joy of cleaning this mess out ..Hood, Safety glasses , Ear Plugs leathers and gloves and dirt sill gets into the dangedest placeswhen the air arc pierces through a blows all the now dry dirt all over ....in case you have not guessed i'm under it...then "More air Chisel" stuff has been there for a long time and it's like cementNow i had the piece to make the fish plate out of but could not get the replacement piece for the bottom of the bull arm so i fixed the crack properly and welded on the fish platepics5 pics per post....your cramping my style guysBacked my CATMA over your CARMA oops clusmy me  What would SATAN do ?? Reply:I'm terribly surprised the original repair didn't hold.

Reply:Sunday and it's nice out The fish plate after doing the nice repair weld you have to grind it all back flat one reason that it was over welded so when i did it was solid all the way...hence the weave in the middleLet me tell you one thing that outer shield wire is tough and hard use your course stone i use the cups for fast metal removalthey are expensive but save time...I use them on my 4 1/2 and the 9 inch grinders and getting it ground flat is easy with them  but they're heavy tooYou will notice that the arm has a slight tweak can't do much about that and when you look down when clamped in the front the arm is tapered also My clamps are as far up as they can reach and i don't have a torch with me...so how do you close that gapPay attention newbiesBecause i'm going to be to busy doing it to take pics and i work alone...You get told about elementary physics here and about weld sequencing ....Heat rises and since i can only reach so high with my clamps you have to do the bottom which is where i will concentrate my heat as i weld and move the clamps as i weld  and beat the top into submission with  5 pound hammer ..  the more you weld the hotter it will get..but the bull arm metal will be pulling heat out alsoSince this is a dozer and will push mud and water it needs to be root welded all the way around to keep it out from behind the fish plate So out comes everyones favorite rod...1/8.. 6010 5P+ DCRP @ 95 Ampswelding the tip then going to the rear re clamping and tightening until the gap closes and doing the same at the top beating from the middle up and welding it as it closesPic of it fully rooted and it fitted up nice and tight no gaps hence the 6010 it will dig into the base metals and make it's own gap whipping out and closing it whipping backIt will be fully welded with the outer shield wire ...but not until i quit throwing up and running to the head I did this because i was sick last night and had to stop and puke about half way to work so called in sick and went to bed for a spelldecided to post this because i'm bored   Last edited by killdozerd11; 01-06-2015 at 09:20 PM.Backed my CATMA over your CARMA oops clusmy me  What would SATAN do ?? Reply:OCD ALERT!!!!!!!THE ARROW IS POINTING THE WRONG WAY !!!!!!!Nice work! Especially getting it to lay flat without major clamping.GravelThe difference between theory and practice is that in theory there is no difference.
Reply:OK, someone get me straight on this....learning this stuff as I go along. On welding the fish plate to the bull arm, I see sharp corners and angles on the plate.  I thought that sharp corners, points, "V's", and the like form stress risers when welded.  The ones I'd seen had the sharp parts rounded off to prevent stress risers.  Which is the proper way to weld those?
Reply:The welds will round off those ...I knew i should have done the point on both ends ...But decided to do the fish plate jokeno going straight across the width angles or round ...Or rounded anglesBacked my CATMA over your CARMA oops clusmy me  What would SATAN do ?? Reply:Thanks for the compliments As you can see i have limited room on the Tundra so i try to plan ahead and have more than what i need of things but i have to be realistic Boss called me last night ...can't live without me ...he got the bottom plate so i will have that to do yet after i get all that dirt out of that arm $$$$$ just doing cleanup workWith the fish plate i just sought to teach newbies how you can use that heat to your advantage and to think about how you go about welding up a joint and in the field nothing goes as planned also you have to learn to think ... this is some of the stuff they don't teach in welding school and a lot of us old guys know how to do this type of adapt and overcome the problem that always rears it's head in the field ...and you need that gal to double jack it into submission 6:00 AM guys time to hit the roadBacked my CATMA over your CARMA oops clusmy me  What would SATAN do ?? Reply:Nice job, killdozerd!  Love to see heavy equipment repairs go well.  (BTW, your arrow IS pointing in the right direction... )In the pictures in post #12, did you use a long weave pattern to cap off everything?  Looked like stringers on the edges.
Reply:I once worked for an outfit from Brazil, CBPO, they shipped an old Cat D-9 which the complete blade assembly was completely cut in half, right through the middle. (for ease of shipping?) Also a bunch of old Euclid scrapers Which about 5 seconds after 7:00, (start time), the state shut 'em down 'cause they didnt have roll cages. Then, drugs were found in the equipment/etc (all shipped from Brazil) To keep from arrest/contract loss, everything was cleaned/etc & used as an artifical reef. All replaced with leased Cat (mostly) stuff. I ran a brand new leased 'Skytrak' fork for a while, it was nice. They never fixed that dozer blade before it sunk.-c-What is the sound of one knee jerking?

Reply:Nice job KD.The arrow is so the operator knows which way the dirt goes
Reply:Now i'm trying to figure the fastest way i can bevel the 2 vertical plates on the underside and fit the new bottom plateI tried to get some flat carbons so i could do it length wise ...No Joy have to order them and they wouldn't be here till MondayGot to bevel 6 ft all over head ...no guide ...it's gonna suck...not room enough inside the arm ...less than 4 inches in order to blow it downward with air arcI guess bevel it with the plasma cutterBacked my CATMA over your CARMA oops clusmy me  What would SATAN do ?? Reply:kill,You poor little bugger, they made you lay in the dirt to fix that, huh?   I've had to do that before too but it usually causes me to whine and bitch a lot while I'm having to do it.   Last time I did any thing on a dozer I got to work inside on a concrete floor.   I gouged off the old and welded on the new lower guide shoe assemblies below the rear idler wheels.   The whole time I was working on it I had two mechanics breathing on me continually asking how much longer it was going to take.  After I was done and got rolled up I decided to return the favor by hanging out and critiquing everything they were doing.  My plan worked, one of them finally got fed up, handed me a $20 and told me to go get some beer. Reply:And just think, in the near future you get to do the other arm before it cracks. Or will they wait until that happens??                                                   MikeOl' Stonebreaker  "Experience is the name everyone gives to their mistakes"Hobart G-213 portableMiller 175 migMiller thunderbolt ac/dc stick Victor O/A setupMakita chop saw
