Hi all, I need an exciter armature for a 1974 Lincoln SA200. My serial number is 748088 and the code is 7307.Mine is toast. I heard they can be rewound for about $350 but the metal bars on my exciter are missing in some areas. No idea how it got so bad.http://www.facebook.com/groups/sa200weldersCurrent machines:Hobart G600 Powered by 1967 Chrysler LH-318 (Project)Hobart GF-250(Traded)68 Redface81 Blackface
Reply:My 2003 200D needed a new exciter armature this spring and I found that lincoln only makes one and its almost $1,000.00.  Tom Fowler offers rewound SA armatures for about 1/2 of that so I ordered one from him and returned my core.  On his I had to do some light resurfacing so the brushes wouldn't burn but that was easy now.  What I've found out is if any of the segments are off by as little as four thousands of an inch the brushes will burn, and thats what his armature was doing.  I could also see it wobbling, which my old one wasn't.  As far as OCV and welding characteristic goes I can't tell any improvements using his rewound armature but I also can't tell any new problems either.  So i guess thats a wash, for about 1/2 the money. At the same time I also ordered Fowlers hand wound exciter coils and tried them in my 200D.  They dropped my OCV about 8 volts and also dropped my welding voltage so I took them back out.  That I didn't feel I could stand with this machine since it seems to struggle with welding voltage already. I think you will find that lincoln doesn't actually offer parts for old SA's anymore, at least that's what I've been told.  I don't think anyone else can make them because of their patents, but I think their 200D armature will work in your machine, but it is high $$.  You shouldn't notice much difference in the arc, at least by my experiences at least, as I believe it has the same part # as your old one has.  I think that because when I was looking for one this spring I found that the part numbers are the same all the way back to1958.   lol  But I don't know enough about them to be able to say they are exactly the same.Thats about all I know.  Hope this helps.Good luckLast edited by slowhand; 10-05-2010 at 07:18 PM.

Reply:A friend of mine got one a couple years ago from an outfit in Illinois that works on lincolns, but I can't remember their name right now.  If I remember right he paid $200.  I think hybriweld (fowler) is charging 360 plus a core and shipping.  I think that is what I paid this spring.  He also has the old style soft brushes.  You need them too.Good luck
