Putting in about 4 miles of dual 8" line.  One natural gas, one saltwater.  There is some chunk rock in this half mile section, plus didn't want to mess with moving trencher across the turnpike so digging it all with the hoe.  Kinda found some large boulders and some solid rock...-------------------------Chemetron AC/DC 300 HFSnap-On MM300L Lincoln SP140 Lincoln AC/DC 225g Lincoln SA200 Lincoln SA200 Miller Bobcat 225GVictor torchesH&M and Mathey beveling machinesMcElroy Plastic pipe fusion

Reply:Yes, that is where the lip has been welded back together...  About 5 years ago, I was digging some rock, and ripped the lip off.  Not prying.  I do not pry.  The good side of this, is it did not break where I welded it back together before. Either across the lip, or on the sides of the bucket.  the bad side, it was 9 degrees when I started putting it back together on thursday...-------------------------Chemetron AC/DC 300 HFSnap-On MM300L Lincoln SP140 Lincoln AC/DC 225g Lincoln SA200 Lincoln SA200 Miller Bobcat 225GVictor torchesH&M and Mathey beveling machinesMcElroy Plastic pipe fusion

Reply:I didn't spend a lot of time on prep work for it.  It was really cold, the bucket is pretty much junk anyway.  We're looking for a better bucket.  This thing welds like crap.  Part of it acts like it's magnetized or something.  Even if you clean it to shiny metal, you see all kinds of crap float up in the puddle...  Main objective was to get these two ditches tied together, pipe lowered in, and backfilled up to the end before the weekend.  I have a Adco V-bottom rock bucket that would work great on this hoe, just need a pin and bushing set for it.  Ran a bead in it with 5/32" 7010, then welded out with 1/8" and 5/32" 7018.-------------------------Chemetron AC/DC 300 HFSnap-On MM300L Lincoln SP140 Lincoln AC/DC 225g Lincoln SA200 Lincoln SA200 Miller Bobcat 225GVictor torchesH&M and Mathey beveling machinesMcElroy Plastic pipe fusion
Reply:Do you know if it was AR400 or something similar? If wasn't preheated when originally built might be why it cracked. I've read about some buckets being built without following the proper welding procedures because it takes longer. That's still a pretty small bucket for that size hoe, so would need to be extra strong for the forces applied.
Reply:htpipeline; very handy you being a welder and all. even a relatively small job like that would have cost some dough. those shanks look like they could use some attention also.i.u.o.e. # 15queens, ny and sunny fla
Reply:Well done repair ...You gouging with O/A ??A lot of those buckets made from plain hot roll and reinforced with the AR wear strips ....High Manganese steels and those need to be preheated and depending on thickness posts heated or at least slow cooled   Come to think on it that section that broke off could be an AR plate since that is the part that takes most of the abuse of diggingYou need one of these ....Maybe not that big but you get the ideaBacked my CATMA over your CARMA oops clusmy me  What would SATAN do ?? Reply:Nice repair.
Reply:The bucket looks like an esco bucket, they have a pretty good welding manual that outlines what parts are made of what. They call them series 12 and series 14 steels with the series 14 being high manganese and not recommend  to be welded and non magnetic. The bucket doesn't look in too bad shape, the wear plate on the heel looks like it's thin in a few spots. I usually air arc those off and just weld in ar-400 wear bars.
Reply:h&t,Having a small bottle of propane and a weed burner along is really handy for taking the chill off things like that before welding.   Breaking the corners off of those smaller buckets seems to happen quite a bit.   I've welded the corner chunk back on to a few of them over the years.Last edited by HT2-4956; 01-10-2015 at 01:03 PM.

Reply:I've used a similar rip n dig bucket on a 330 Link belt excavator and those things are awesome in rocky, hard stuff. Dug through a bunch of fractured basalt on one job, it did help having a D-9L with a single shank to loosen things up just a bit first.
Reply:We were talking about one of those ripper buckets just the other day.  We dig around too many live lines to use one much though.  I prefer a Adco V-bottom bucket for rock really.  I have two, a 24" for this size machine, then a 36" for a 330 size machine.  But I don't have the pin and bushing set to put it on this 200.  I actually have a 18" V bottom for a 580 backhoe too.-------------------------Chemetron AC/DC 300 HFSnap-On MM300L Lincoln SP140 Lincoln AC/DC 225g Lincoln SA200 Lincoln SA200 Miller Bobcat 225GVictor torchesH&M and Mathey beveling machinesMcElroy Plastic pipe fusion
Reply:The other bucket is one we borrowed.  It's off a 320 Cat.  The intention was to finish this ditch with it, then I was gonna weld our bucket up over the weekend... The 320 bucket is 3/4" too narrow between the ears to fit on the 200 Komatsu...-------------------------Chemetron AC/DC 300 HFSnap-On MM300L Lincoln SP140 Lincoln AC/DC 225g Lincoln SA200 Lincoln SA200 Miller Bobcat 225GVictor torchesH&M and Mathey beveling machinesMcElroy Plastic pipe fusion

Reply:h&t,Just out of curiosity...what's the biggest portable welding machine you've got?   If you've got enough machine and a good source of compressed air, being able to carbon arc gouge out in the field will make bucket repairs like you just did a whole lot easier and faster to do.

Reply:After having this bucket about 5 years, noticed a tag on it the other day.  Evidently it was manufactured by a company out of Texas named Entek.  I thought I found a website for them, but it's a dead link, so I don't know if they're still in business or not...  It's still welded together, put new teeth on it today.  I've made it back thru the rock that ripped it apart the first time, so maybe it'll hold a while...  At least with the new teeth on it, it's worth at least $400...lol-------------------------Chemetron AC/DC 300 HFSnap-On MM300L Lincoln SP140 Lincoln AC/DC 225g Lincoln SA200 Lincoln SA200 Miller Bobcat 225GVictor torchesH&M and Mathey beveling machinesMcElroy Plastic pipe fusion
