i am stuck in between these two machines. they are both on craigslist. the lincoln weldanpower 225 is ac dc+ and dc- and has the briggs 16 IC engine. comes with 2 sets of leads and is in great shape $800 cash 6,000 watt generator . the miller is a ac dc as well is 600 , 16hp kohler rebuilt motor, 23ft of leads and an all weather cover. $700 obo.i am leaning towards the lincoln , but i have read on here about the slipring problems and i would really hate to sink $800 into something that is going to break sooner or later because it seems inevitable.i am mechanically inclined so i could tear it all apart and bring it to a motor shop to fix if it did happen , but i dunnowhat machine would you go for ?thanks - Art
Reply:Welcome to the forum Art and that's a tough one.Are you sure on the '82 vintage of the Lincoln? The earlier units were only 5000 generators and ran at 1800 for power and 2200 for maximum welding capacity. Later units run at 3600rpm for both. Both good machines and the Bluestar auxiliary power is produced at a reduced engine speed of 1800rpm and welds at a speed of 3000rpm.If stand-by power is a major concern you have to weigh the quiter Miller against the larger capacity and louder Lincoln. A SN for the Miller and code# for the Lincoln would allow nailing down the specifics of each unit.If the Lincoln is a later version and has the CV (Constant Voltage) tap it woudl be a no brainer for me - the Lincoln. With the CV tap you could run a MIG suitcase welder for better results than a VS (Voltage Sensing) suitcase unit off a CC (Constant Current) only machine.Flip a coin? Reply:here is what it looks like , it says in the ad its an 82 and that it is a 6000watt generator.i tried looking at the pic , but i can only make out 65 for the last 2 code numbers , but that brings me to an onan engine , and this one is the IC briggs 16 horse model. Attached Images
Reply:how hard is it honestly to replace the slip rings if they did go bad ? and if i took the rotor out myself how much would it cost to have a shop install them and true them up , and i reinstall it?also it says on the faceplate rated at 3750 rpm , or maybee its 3700 rpm , its kinda blurryLast edited by thinktwicez71; 11-02-2010 at 02:59 PM.
Reply:ok he said he'd take 750 instead of 800 , if everything works , is this a good deal ?it comes with 1 long set , and 1 short set of leads
Reply:Could maybe be code# 8705 or 9095? In either case that's manual IM-308 with the Briggs and it doesn't have the CV tap.Unit SN (A and first three digits) would nail the model year down for sure.I know of another member that had a machine shop braze his slip rings and true them up and a source for a set of them as well. I don't believe a motor shop replacement would be too expensive. That 3700/3750 is no-load rated speed and full load would settle in at 3600rpm for a 60Hz 2-pole generator.MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!
Reply:Depending on what size those leads are and exactly what "long" is, their combined value alone could be as much as half the $750 asking price. That Miller ad did say OBO so. . . Any photos of that one?Still have to weigh the difference in generator capacity too.MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!
Reply:here is the other one , comes with 23 foot cables for 600.00so what one would you go for ? im not really likeing the fact that the miller engine was rebuilt , rather have a unit that i know nothing was touched and is original , cause it might be a cob job Attached Images
Reply:I may be wrong, as I have been many times, but that engine on the Miller looks more like a Tecumseh than a Kohler.A few of my toys !LinuxMintManjaroMiller Roughneck 2E Lincoln WeldPak 100HTP MTS 160 Chicago Electric 80amp Inverter Victor O/A

Reply:Originally Posted by junk collectorYou are not wrong, that is a Tecumseh OH160. I would be wary of a "rebuilt" Tecumseh, also will be much easier getting parts for the Briggs.
Reply:I have 3 of these, 2 briggs and one onan, great little machines. they will run 7018 1/8 all day long and weld real good, even push 5/32 pretty good. One of my Briggs I bought when I was 17 back in 1981, yeay I'm 48 and I still run that machine today, I did change a valve on it once. It is not a quiet machine but thats what long leads are for. As far as I know the slip rings are obsolete and cannot be gotten from Lincoln, However any good machine shop can create them fairly easily. I have not had any slip ring problems on any of them. 1 is in very poor shape that I bought for $65 dollars for parts, I brought it home and it really looked hopeless being completely rotted out, however I cleaned the carb and used a remote fuel tank, fired it and it ran and welded really well, So some day I will build it new sheet metal, I have already given it a new cover but it needs the works. picture below. Reply:does anyone know if a canvas cover from a ranger , or gxt would fit a weldanpower 225 ?cause it sounds like the lincoln is the way to go |
