I just got another this one nedes some Idler work but is running welding. someone swiched the face and didnt transfer the code or sn is there another way to I.D. this machine it is an old one as in red face it has the roung gen not octagonal. any help would be just super thank's guys.1997 SA 250

Reply:He stated it's a round housing kolot. Member denrep posted a photo of a number stamped in the generator housing near the engine/generator split line awhile back that is reported as being the unit code or serial # (?). However, I have a '58 vintage (round housing) code# 3555 out here that I have yet to find such a stamping. Reply:I will have to look in the a.m. as it is to dark and wet to go crawling around that thing tonight. But I will hopefully find that number. Duane how does it feel to be back on U.S. soil. Is that 58 a hurcules? Do you know any way to test the Idler it is the square electric varity.there is no switch like on my 1980 and I couldn't get it to throttle up or down. but the governer works atleast when you push and hold the kill switch. I cant thank all of you here at weldingweb enough but I hope that I learn enough that I will someday be the one handing down the knowledge when you guy's are otherwise pre-ocupied.Thank's again to all.1997 SA 250
Reply:Good to be back in the good 'ol US of A to say the least.It's a Continental F-162 in the '58.If you mean the R-57 idler, you can down load the manual for it here http://content.lincolnelectric.com//...im/IM179G1.pdf.Common problems are stuck needle (float) valve due to varnish from gasoline vapors or general crud and plugged timing valve felt. Both can be corrected by disassembling the unit and cleaning with brake cleaner. The R-57 works on vacuum and operates like a shunt circuit in that the control wires parallel the + weld output lead from the brushes to the output stud. The current passing thru the control coil upon striking an arc creates a magnetic force that pulls the operating plunger down allowing the float valve to open (if it's not stuck closed from varnish or crud.
