I just got an sa 200 from auction. I dont know much about it but it was cheap at 1k so now its in my back yard. From the best I can determine it was built in1981. What type of winding is in it? Heavy cu or aluminum or normal cu wound? Is there a table somewhere that cross references the year or the code against what type of winding?
Reply:This would have been better off posted in the Lincoln specific forum but just the same the easiest way to tell is from the shape of the main generator barrel. A round barrel would be all copper wound and the hexagon barrel would be all aluminum - unless the main shunt coils had been replaced with copper versions at some point. The year of the unit is determined by the SN stamped in the faceplate unless it has been replaced and the one replacing it failed to transfer the SN onto the new piece.http://www.lincolnelectric.com/en-us...of_Machine.pdfThere's an entire "Sticky" thread in the Lincoln section devoted to the SA200 and being a member for 5-1/2 years I'm surprised you aren't aware of all the basic information there and in the many of others on these units to date.Congratulations on the new to you machine.MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!
Reply:Wow really, so if my ? 1990 89-90, is of an octagon barrel it's all aluminum wound? I'd thought they only done that a few years and earlier then listed? No I didn't read Lincoln forum yet but I guess it's now on my list of looking fors!
Reply:I don't recall when they went back to copper so hopefully CEP, Pipeliner, gizzardgutz, Adam Arc or one of the other SA200 "encyclopedias" will chime in to clarify. The octagon barrel has plenty of room for copper components but the older round can't accommodate the larger aluminum hence the slight difference in diameters with the octagon being the larger.MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!

Reply:I believe it was 71 or 72 that they went to aluminum, mine is a 73 and aluminum.
Reply:It was actually mid 1973 when they went to aluminum. I had a 1974, nothing to write home about, just another welder. Now a 100% copper SA-200 it something to jump up and down about!
