I'm researching for a midrange plasma cutter purchase and got to thinking- is there a unit that can be powered from a DC source to a "box" to reduce the cost vs. a traditional unit... similar to a HF box for a tig rig? I would think someone could cut the cost roughly in half by using shop air and a welder that one already has. I asked a real welder and he speculated that the waveform isn't right for this application but its DC- a flat wave- how different can it be?Thunderbolt AC/DC330AB/P + Bernard coolerSyncrowave 250Oxy/Ace torchDayton 160 MIG6CF pot with 185 compressorToo much big equipmentEven more small tools
Reply:The voltage for plasma is about twice what a welder puts out.By the time that you build a power modulator with per pulse regulation and the high voltage pilot. The simple power supply part of it is not much of a cost.
Reply:The only unit like this I'm aware of is the old Powcon Starcut. But it's obsolete now.Tiger Sales: AHP Distributor www.tigersalesco.comAHP200x; AHP 160ST; MM350P, Spoolmatic 30A; Everlast PowerTig 185; Thermal Dynamics 60i plasma. For Sale: Cobra Mig 250 w/ Push-pull gun. Lincoln Wirematic 250
