I'm making a bending tester for 3/8 steel and AL. I wanting to weld in 2 inch wrist pins and 1.5 for the plunger. Welding them to steel. Will the pins wanna crack?
Reply:this guy did it and I think I found it on here.
Reply:Yep. Use "SuperMissleRod" (er312).Weld like a "WELDOR", not a wel-"DERR" MillerDynasty700DX,Dynasty350DX4ea,Dynasty200DX,Li ncolnSW200-2ea.,MillerMatic350P,MillerMatic200w/spoolgun,MKCobraMig260,Lincoln SP-170T,PlasmaCam/Hypertherm1250,HFProTig2ea,MigMax1ea.
Reply:Thanks shovelon. What does super missle rod mean? I was thinking of beveling it 1/4 or more on the ends because I heard the hardening in 1/8 thick. Will pre heat help? 500 degrees
Reply:just did this. This pin is about 1.4 inches in diameter. And that's 1/4 plate. It welded really good tack each side and the tacks didn't crack then welded it up and first time I stopped it cracked where I stopped u can see it on the right side. I think because I let off the pedal to fast. I'm still getting the hang of that part in welding. And the 2 and last time I kept the end of the weld puddled for a little bit and it looked good. Welded with 309. Is the 312 better?

Reply:Well you did good. SuperMissileRod is a tradename for ER312. Anyway 312 is astounding for crack sensitive joints. Better IMO than 309 which I hate. 312 is recommened for steel to steels, steel to stainless, and stainless to stainless of unknown chemistry. Other than that it is superior in strength than 309, and flows dreamy. It is recommended for hardened steels like tool and die parts.Last edited by shovelon; 12-11-2014 at 12:50 AM.Weld like a "WELDOR", not a wel-"DERR" MillerDynasty700DX,Dynasty350DX4ea,Dynasty200DX,Li ncolnSW200-2ea.,MillerMatic350P,MillerMatic200w/spoolgun,MKCobraMig260,Lincoln SP-170T,PlasmaCam/Hypertherm1250,HFProTig2ea,MigMax1ea.
Reply:Thanks alot man!!!! I used to hate 309 also. But I started getting better at cleaning the metal really good. That stuff doesn't like to much heat either. I'm gona go get 312 tomorrow. I'm a 1/16 guy. How about you what size filler do you like?and this is going to be for bending 3/8 steel. For coupons 2 inch x 6 inch and smaller. Do you know if that is under 50000 psi. What is a standard size width of a cupon that is 6 inches long? Thanks in advance
Reply:I have .035 and .045" 312. Love that stuff. I have been trying to substantiate it's use on 304 but 347 is the better match. I believe 312 has a tensile of 120k or thereabouts.Last edited by shovelon; 12-11-2014 at 01:14 AM.Weld like a "WELDOR", not a wel-"DERR" MillerDynasty700DX,Dynasty350DX4ea,Dynasty200DX,Li ncolnSW200-2ea.,MillerMatic350P,MillerMatic200w/spoolgun,MKCobraMig260,Lincoln SP-170T,PlasmaCam/Hypertherm1250,HFProTig2ea,MigMax1ea.

Reply:I think it only super missle weld if your a good welder lol
Reply:Originally Posted by motolife313You use .045 even for 1/8 or 1/4 inch? And do you 312 instead 70-s2 all the time for steel
Reply:Not to mention that you would have to purge all open butt (pun intended) roots.

Reply:It is Super Missileweld.

Reply:No one has 312 in stock. I gota buy it off the Internet. Is arc-zone a safe place to buy? They have er312 for 18 bucks a pound. It's Washington alloy I think. Is that a good brand?

Reply:All stainless steel consumables need back purging when doing open root butt welding with TIG otherwise the chromium in them oxidizes and you get what is commonly known as sugaring.Pun intended was linked to Terry's comment on using dollar bills to wipe his rear (butt - rear, get it?)

Reply:Originally Posted by motolife313I don't think I have ever got suger from welding with 309 on steel. This is a fillet weld. And what's wrong with sugaring?Originally Posted by con_fuse9I thought 347 has titanium in it. I have not tried 347 on anything but 321. 347 better than 308L on 304L? I find 347/321 easier to weld (not as heat or oxygen sensitive - meaning better color). Am I wrong?

Reply:found some pins that I will never need to worry about breaking. 2 inch Cummings wrist pins that are solid. The welded one in the pic is 1 3/8 and I plan on using that for bending 1/2 inch and I'm just gona switch the plunger size. 1.5 inch pin for bending 3/8.
Reply:The guy hooked me up for free
Reply:should I leave a little gap inbetween the pins or no gap? I would think no gap so the pins sit on each other instead of the weld but just checking
Reply:This pins are gona be the plunger btw
Reply:heres where I'm at on my bender. Almost done. The pins will go on top off the big pipe on the jack
Reply:Anyone have any advice?
Reply:I'm wondering if its stronger to have a gap or no gap between the pins? I forgot to mention that part

Reply:Yes I'm making my own bend tester.
Reply:The guys wanna charge me 45 bucks to bend the little piece of 3/8 coupon each time. And that's just me having them bend it to see how good I did for practice. So I'm like screw that ill make my own and bend them my self so that way when I wanna take the test I will have confidence I'm not gona wast couple hundred bucks if I fail.
Reply:Originally Posted by motolife313Yes I'm making my own bend tester.
Reply:Ill take some pics soon. I think you don't understand my question
Reply:im gona weld the 2 pins together then weld them to the big pipe on top of the bottle jack. Then I can remove it and make different ones for different thickness metals I wanna bend. I was wonder if I should gap the pins slightly like the pic above.

Reply:I wanna know why everything is stuck to that wall...Welding/Fab Pics: www.UtahWeld.com
Reply:looking down from the top
Reply:There was a bunch of scale or some kind of crap on the bench and I ground it off on to the wall I guess. I could just spray paint it white. Or if I tip over my Molotov cocktail enough times it might clean it off
Reply:If it was me, I'd just weld a piece of bar or shaft to the pin and be done with it. I guess welding the two pins together like that would also work. Not quite sure why you are reinventing the wheel though. The drawings I posted to you from AWS D1.1 are pretty clear on how to build a bend tester. They aren't all that difficult to follow..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan
Reply:It would be easier to get the pins straight with each other because I can just lay them flat on the bench and weld them. And I'm going by the drawing. It's asking for hardend pins which I have and I'm going with 1.5 inch plunger and a hair over 2 3/8 rollers. I am going to use 1 3/8 plunger for bending half inch. How am I not going by the drawing? Not sure where I would get a hardend plunger like most guys use and I'm sure it would cost a arm and a legg. I got all my pins for free and have about 50 bucks into this so far. I already had the jack. I paid my Machinest 15 bucks to machine the 3/4 thick pipe by 3 1/2 by 1.5 Id that he put to 1.816 and he made it flat. Right in front of me that's included in the 60 I have into it |
