Welding Test

Well I went and took my test to do bridge work had to take the state dot test 6g pipe and vertical fillet and overhead all had to be do with 7018 rod with no grinding after plates and pipe were in place couldn't even grind tie in got results back for plate today and failed plate because I had a few undercuts and some flash he said has me worried about the 6g but they did no visual on pipe and we had to grind it back flush to pipe when done question I have is what is he talking about we he says the plate had some flash?  I've been mig welding for almost 20 years with not much stick I've only been burning rod almost daily for around 6 months maybe anyone with tips on the 6g pipe and 3g 4g I would appreciate it . If I fail 6g I'm going back and plan on taking 3g 4g next

Reply:Dang it That's what I was going to say! I never get to the question first... Oh well...Try turning the heat down about 10 amps or keep a tighter arc to correct the undercut.... Basically you just need to put a bit more filler in the puddle, as far as the "flash" marks. Try hitting the end of your rod with a file or sand paper ( teachers frown on the old concrete slap) this will help with starts and re starts, might help you keep the rod from wandering around while trying to start the arc.... That is if it's allowed, some places won't let you file the rods.Real welders know how to penetrate!(Equipment)Whatever can be used to beat my opponent into submission!
Reply:You using an auto dark helmet? I will only use an auto dark helmet for a weld test. It helps me prevent stray arc strikes. Reply:No I wasn't but I will have one next time and also will have extra couching for leaning on with a extra layer of sleeve the fact I had been pushing rip Raf rock on a Dozier for 5 days prior to the test didn't help the olé arms to much either.
