SI I was practicing welding today running beads like most every weekend.  I cool my practice pieces in a bucket of water, then I chip the remaining slag off and by then, it has boiled off all the remaining water.  I then us a cupped wire brush to clean all remaining slag and flash rust off.  I finished brushing a piece, shut the grinder off and put the grinder down on the table as it was winding down.  It promptly spun around, hit my workpiece and bounced off the table into the bucket of water.I unplugged it and used the air gun to blow it out.  I hung it up to dry.  I'll give it a day or two to completely dry and then see if it will work.  It's a 4.5in HF so it will be no real loss if it does not work.  Murphy...he's always there....I really have no idea what I am doing. Two Shop Cats (not Bobcats...real cats)Miller DialArc 250 AC/DCScratch-Start TIG SetupMIG 175Plasma CutterO/A
Reply:Maybe it will be an improvement. I am guilty. I have one too. I use it only when I really need it. Reply:Spray as much WD40 inside as you can. Then let it drip dry. Most people don't know the WD in WD40 stands for Water Displacement. Works awesome on drying out wet electrical things like distributors.kidtigger24Last edited by kidtigger24; 12-21-2014 at 10:16 PM.  They think I’m crazy, but I know better. It is not I who am crazy. It is I who am MAD!
Reply:I think you will be good if you let it dry in a warm spot for a couple days. I have one to mines the black black and decker or skill I forgot. But it was like the best 10 bucks I ever spent. Works great but does get hot quick. I wanna buy the 50 dollar electric 1/4 grinder soon. Instead of running the compressor.
Reply:It'll probably work - heck, I likely would have blown it out with air, plugged it in and ran it to dry it the rest of the way Dave J.Beware of false knowledge; it is more dangerous than ignorance. ~George Bernard Shaw~ Syncro 350Invertec v250-sThermal Arc 161 and 300MM210DialarcTried being normal once, didn't take....I think it was a Tuesday.
Reply:My father-in-law was an avid fisherman.  Would only use Zebco reels.  EVERY, I repeat, EVERY reel he had, new or old, he would dip into the water before he used it.   Said it lubricated them and made them cast better.....I often asked him about them rusting up, but I guess he never let them have a chance to rust, fishing all the time. Maybe the grinders need a dunking now and then!
Reply:If it survived you could treat it to a "spa day", and tear it apart and lube/relube the gears in the head.

Reply:Don't spray it out with lubricant... just let it completely air dry, water isn't going to hurt anything...Welding/Fab Pics: www.UtahWeld.com
Reply:wannab1; having your grinder fall in a bucket of water is a bummer for sure. those wire wheels are tricky. got to keep your eye on them all the time. just curious- when it fell in did it trip the gfi or shop breaker?i.u.o.e. # 15queens, ny and sunny fla

Reply:I'm voting for ethanol soak to wash the water out, then put it in a vacuum bag or chamber to boil all the alcohol out, then regrease and try it. Isopropyl might work too but you want 95% or 100% not 70%.The minerals left when water dries can form a current path on any cicuit board in the thing and probably other places eg the armature, windings, brushes.
Reply:Time to switch to all pneumatic tools.    Hardly use any electric tools if I have a pneumatic counterpart. 1st on WeldingWeb to have a scrolling sig! HTP Invertig 400HTP Invertig 221HTP ProPulse 300HTP ProPulse 200 x2HTP ProPulse 220MTSHTP Inverarc 200TLP HTP Microcut 875SC
Reply:Doc, It was not engaged in the "on" position so it did not trip the breaker.  Also, the end of the grinder where the power cord enters did not submerge at all.  A little splash, perhaps but no immersion on that end.  The water ended up covering/submerging about 4/5 of the grinder.I really have no idea what I am doing. Two Shop Cats (not Bobcats...real cats)Miller DialArc 250 AC/DCScratch-Start TIG SetupMIG 175Plasma CutterO/A
Reply:Oscar, before I started practicing beads last night I was finishing hooking up my new Husky-pro 60 gallon air compressor.  I had also oiled up my impact wrench, air drill, and 3/8 right hand impact.  Soooo, it may have been a sign that the compressor is now the new boss in the shop...tool wars!I really have no idea what I am doing. Two Shop Cats (not Bobcats...real cats)Miller DialArc 250 AC/DCScratch-Start TIG SetupMIG 175Plasma CutterO/A
Reply:Blow it out with an air hose so you can get back to work.
Reply:It is not a great chore to take it apart. Probably needs grease anyway.
Reply:Just let it dry and hope it works. Wd 40 will make the smoke come out of it. Those things run on smoke. If you let it out it will never run again!Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Reply:When I worked in the strip mines at some point every tool I was working with got submerged in a mud puddle.  I did get shocked more than a few times but those grinders are pretty tough. Every day I took it out of my box surprisingly it worked. I kept the HF one around for fancy things like getting wet and dropping and stepping on when I couldn't avoid it. The death of the HF grinder was the crappy plastic body of the grinder cracking in half.  I think the grinder will be fine but it can't hurt it to take it apart and give her a good scrubbing.
Reply:I don't understand....It's a freaking HF grinder; toss it and don't loose sleep over it.    Just for $hits and giggles; turn it on and then submerge it in water.  I once had a crappy shop vac that started making noise; for giggles I just let it run and go up in flames.   Neighbor starts freaking out when he sees my flaming shop-vac in the front yard fully engulfed.   WTF....When working in a wet location; pneumatic tools can't be beat!...
Reply:I would rather save the 50 bucks to buy something I don't already have.

Reply:Now wasn't that fun!!!!    You are going to love that DeWalt grinder; keep it out of your quench bucket and stay away from Harbor Fright!
Reply:I've moved my water bucket to underneath my welding table now.  It was beside the table where things could accidentally fall into it.  Now, I have to make an effort to put something into the water!Live and learn.I really have no idea what I am doing. Two Shop Cats (not Bobcats...real cats)Miller DialArc 250 AC/DCScratch-Start TIG SetupMIG 175Plasma CutterO/A
