I have been welding for a month now after picking up my little Hobart 140, My first project was replacing floorpans after a wreck in my F-100. but since then I've been using any excuse to turn my machine on and practice. The drop cord hanger and shop towel holder were my "practice projects" before i started working on my cart which i already posted. They are made from a sheet of 16 gauge steel i was cutting to size with a jigsaw  and a piece of pipe i found around the house with 1/8" wall thickness. The welds were not pretty I eventually realized i was moving too fast, I was worried about blowing through after my experience with floor pans. Now i have a 25' dropcord at the ready beside my shops doorLike i said... very poor welds, and my inhouse workbench was cluttered when i took this.Im pretty happy with the progress ive made since i started. welds still aren't great but im learning.Got bored today and was tired of setting my gun on the work bench and bumping the trigger, wasting wire and whatnot. i had a scrap piece of 1/8" x 1.5" flatbar and decided I'd make a holder. ill remake it with a magnet when i get around to building a welding tableI would appreciate any tips you may have, Would also like to hear more ideas for useful projects. I cut up a few feet of 1" flat bar yesterday and practiced lap joints and corner joints, but i really hate to toss it once I've ran a few passes
Reply:Looks good.
Reply:Cool man!
Reply:Keep on keeping on.    That is the only way you learn and by getting help from the great group on the web here.   As I have said lots of time lots of talent and experience here.
Reply:Nice work. Little projects give you practice and something useful afterwards...and most importantly, you're critiquing your work and learning to understand what's happening.DB
Reply:Keep melting metal man. Your off to a good start.
Reply:Great start. Maybe consider getting a piece of thin sheet metal to lay on top of the bench to cover the wood. Since you are beginning , a fire extinguisher, 5 gallon bucket of water, and even a garden hose connected maybe some handy items. Just a reminder if you do play safe .
