Hey guys, ready for my next project. I have been into mountain biking since I was a kid and it is time to have a bike stand so it is easier to work on my bikes. The ones on the market are either to big, junk or big bucks. I would rather have an removal one (I have square tubing welded under the bench top for receiver hitches) to mount on my bench. Lets talk about some of the designs I am trying to incorporate.1-) must be height adj2-) I would love to be able to rotate the bike 3-) Make/design really nice holding clamps but not sure how to go about it. I dont want to use wood or pvc ideas??thanks!!
Reply:Seems like a good clamp would be pretty tough to fabricate.  I have this one on my stand.  Has worked great for the past 20 years.  The "wall mount" version would be easy to bolt to some square tubing for your bench.http://www.parktool.com/product/delu...stand-prs-4w-1

Reply:I probably wouldn't bother trying to make a clamp -- the Park PCS-12 bench clamp retails for $120, while the deluxe PRS-4W is about $190. REI carries the former, so with a 20% off coupon it's less than $100.However, I just use a PCS-10 stand. I think I paid $160 for it last year. They fold up pretty darn small and they're really sturdy. Height adjustment is a breeze. And having mostly open space on both sides of the bike can make some things a lot easier -- I can imagine a bench getting in the way sometimes. And being a portable stand, the most useful thing is being able to bring it with you on those long bike trips -- you can't do that with your bench. The PCS-10 stand uses the same clamp as the PCS-12, and the "bench mount" part of it would be REALLY easy to fabricate since the clamp itself just slides onto round tubing. My suggestion would be to just buy a PCS-10 stand and then fabricate the bench mount if you want it. That way you have the best of both worlds.Really interested to see what you come up with!
Reply:What about a piece of pipe extended off the side of your workbench the same size as the frame upright? Put it down about 28" so you could just pop the seat off a bike and set it into the tube upside down by the seat post. Clamp a piece of rod down beside it and a pair of vice grips to keep it from turning...250 amp Miller DialArc AC/DC StickF-225 amp Forney AC Stick230 amp Sears AC StickLincoln 180C MIGVictor Medalist 350 O/ACut 50 PlasmaLes

Reply:I've got a Feedback stand and I love it. You might be able to fab a similar clamp set up. Millermatic 200Hobart Handler 120Victor O/A & Ramco BandsawLincoln 225 ACSnapOn AD HoodMiller XMT304/22AHypertherm Powermax 1650 G3Lincoln Idealarc DC600 w/Extreme 12 VSMiller Digital Elite "Joker"
Reply:I would make some sort of clamp out of high tech W-fiber (wood) jaws and line it with a polymer layer (rubber).  If it isn't elegant enough for your bike, glue on some Opals, or whatever your birthstone is."USMCPOP" First-born son: KIA  Iraq 1/26/05Syncrowave 250 w/ Coolmate 3Dialarc 250, Idealarc 250SP-175 +Firepower TIG 160S (gave the TA 161 STL to the son)Lincwelder AC180C (1952)Victor & Smith O/A torchesMiller spot welder

Reply:Oldendum,, who makes the the first pic clamp?? The second looks really nice, the wood looks professional. Thats def another option and the best I have seen. Wonder where they got that grey foam? Originally Posted by OldendumHere's a clamp that looks simple enough. And another.
Reply:The stands are totally different. Ive worked on heavier DH bikes in the past on the Park Tools type stands and never had a problem. These days with dropper posts and exotic tube sets, you can always just throw a bike in a clamping bike stand vise. It really depends on the bike(s) you have. Since I like to walk around all sides of the bike, a bench mounted vice type setup would not work for me.
Reply:BTW, these are my two babies...
Reply:I don't know who makes the first clamp.  Some guy posted that pic from a bike shop and proceeded to make a similar clamp out of wood."USMCPOP" First-born son: KIA  Iraq 1/26/05Syncrowave 250 w/ Coolmate 3Dialarc 250, Idealarc 250SP-175 +Firepower TIG 160S (gave the TA 161 STL to the son)Lincwelder AC180C (1952)Victor & Smith O/A torchesMiller spot welder

Reply:Guys, this guy will let this park stand go for $70 and he is not that far from me. What do you think? I am not sure what model it is.http://longisland.craigslist.org/bik/4828046814.html

Reply:My park stand is older than that one and I recently bought parts for it when I tore it all down and powder coated it. Park makes nice stuf . I'll post up some pics later.Park tools customer service was awesome. They got me a manual so I could pick which small parts I needed/wanted.Last edited by Jimmy_pop; 01-25-2015 at 06:04 AM.
Reply:1 De-Sta-Co clamp from MSC for $18.00, hinge & piece of pipeBeen working great for 25 years Attached ImagesLast edited by WeldingMachine; 01-25-2015 at 06:28 AM.Buy American, or don't whine when you end up on the bread line.
Reply:Last summer I made a 90 degree angle out of pipe clamps and left the jaws on the top [horizontal] piece. I screwed wooden "v" pads to the jaws to hold the seat post vertically... Yes pictures because I had to harvest the 90 degree fitting for a pullup bar."I thank God for all the freedoms we've got in this country, I cherish even the right to burn the flag, but I'll tell you what, we've also got the right to bear arms and if you burn my flag I'll shoot you"-Johnny Cash
Reply:I have a Feedback stand.  It's nice.  It would be hard to build something good without machine tools.  That being said, I have machine tools and still bought a stand.  Having a portable makes it nice to travel with.  I hate working on my bike on the ground any more...did that for too long.If you want to build one, I think the Park would be the easiest to model and build with hand tools, basically a big toggle clamp.
Reply:I have the park tools home mechanic bench mount repair stand that i made a really simple bottom plate to hold in my vise. It works really well and I use it for my 40 pound downhill bike. It was pretty cheap and my vise swivels if i need to. The stand itself ins't height adjustable but you can rotate the bike to reach everything like you can on a floor mount stand. I have a small shop so its is nice and small and easy to throw on a shelf when not in use. I am at work right now and don't have any pictures of it sorry.
