I'm planning to replace my light weight folding table with a beefier more permanent one.  Here's what I'm thinking so far.  The top is 3 x 1/2 cold rolled bar stock screwed into 3 x 3 x 1/2 angle.  Holes are 3 inches on center to allow packing the bars tight together or with what ever 3 inch spacing I want.  It will be on casters but I have not shown that yet. What other features do you recommend?
Reply:I would run another angle iron down the middle. Depending on what you are doing on the table you may warp or bend the 1/2" X 3" bars other than that it looks good!Ypop
Reply:It will need a tube connecting the legs at the bottom brace, otherwise it will wiggle.
Reply:I'd add little hooks and holders for tools you use while welding, e.g. your angle grinder, slag hammer, etc.  A can to hold extra rods, or to toss rod butts into.  Stuff like that.-RuarkLincoln 3200HDHobart Stickmate LX235TWECO Fabricator 211i
Reply:Ohhh.... a butt holder. I like that. Dunno how many times I've knocked that stupid can off my bench. Come to think of it, I don't know why I didn't think of adding something years ago. Reply:Well if it will be a permanent fixture, and you aren't worried about weight, you could always add tool storage drawers into the design of the table.  Something for your spare consumables.  Something maybe on a casters that pulls out.  Perhaps connect the two cross members with a lower table/shelf for storage of your bigger tools.
Reply:Add some 2" receiver hitches on the corners to mount and dis-mount tool accessories as you need to.That way you can have things like a bench vise mounted with the sturdyness of being bolted to the table without having it actually bolted to the table.
Reply:Little more bracing and I think you will have an excellent table!!!  Very sturdy.  Good luck with the build.

Reply:Updates to design based on input so far.  I added angle braces all around for stiffness and a handy spot for clamps and grinders.  I also added the pockets for a slide out section or other attachments.  Thanks for all the suggestions.  Ultimately, it will be on casters and moved around the shop.  I TIG and stick weld so I like to keep the area under the bench clear so I can move the foot pedal with ease and stick welding is dirtier so under bench storage is not desirable for me.

Reply:Originally Posted by BistineauYou might want to think about moving the receiver hitch tubes up to the angle iron right under the top as opposed to the way you show in your drawing. I know it will get in the way of clamping right there, but not too bad if you have large enough clamps to span the increased distance.
