I know this isn't a welding project but I know you guys have good info on finishing metals.. so here it goes.I have an oven, stove top, and hood that were originally burnt orange and I sanded them down and sprayed them with Rustoleum high temp paint. The can said it would come out semi-gloss. Maybe it did, but it certainly isn't as shiny as an oven / stove top usually is.Any thoughts? I wanted to pick up some clear coat to see if that would help make it pop. Any other ideas?cheers,
Reply:You can clear it, but the clear usually yellows. For high temp and gloss, I usually go for a ceramic-based engine enamel, like VHT.
Reply:Semi-gloss is just that, SEMI-gloss(partly gloss). Meaning it is not going to have a slick shiny appearance, but more shiny than a flat color would be, which is no gloss at all. If you want it to be shiny shiny, you will need to find a gloss finish. You can apply it directly over the coats you have now. Try to get some by the same manufacturer, so it will be compatible.
Reply:Appliance paint is a little bit of a different animal. I suggest using it. I have seen several appliances that people used regular paint on and they always looked ghetto. Appliance paint has a bit of a self-leveling property.http://www.homedepot.com/s/black+appliance+paint?NCNI-5GravelThe difference between theory and practice is that in theory there is no difference.
Reply:I know the difference between semi gloss and gloss, but this is looking barely semi gloss. The Rustoleum high temp didn't have full gloss otherwise I would have bought it.I'm looking into the ceramic idea. I like that except I'm not sure about baking these things. The stove top that is pictured wouldn't be bad, but the oven door and the hood would be cumbersome. Thanks for the link. I'll check it out.Last edited by engineer1984; 01-28-2015 at 04:20 PM.
Reply:Gravel,That looks like a good idea... I don't think it can withstand high heat. This would be good for the hood and probably the oven door.
Reply:most appliances use an epoxy paint that takes some abuse....Of all the things I lost I miss my mind the most...I know just enough about everything to be dangerous......You cant cure stupid..only kill it...
Reply:I'm alo in on the appliance epoxy, I've done it before and it looks good and holds up to the heat. When a welder tells you to "stick it", what do they really mean?"In a time of universal deceit, telling the truth is a revolutionary act." - George Orwell

Reply:Bearston,You've used it on a stove top before and everything was fine?
Reply:I've painted fridges with good results using automotive paint mixed as white. Not sure what to do for higher heat other than an engine enamel. I'm sure I've seen it in gloss black and it works very well.Mr. HE

Reply:I've painted appliances with automotive paint before and it works fine until you get to that stove top. The stove tops that I have seen were porcelainized instead of painted to withstand the heat and abuse of flying pots and pans. It's extremely difficult to sand the sheen off of it, and consequently even if you get the right epoxy to withstand the heat, it will chip very easily.250 amp Miller DialArc AC/DC StickF-225 amp Forney AC Stick230 amp Sears AC StickLincoln 180C MIGVictor Medalist 350 O/ACut 50 PlasmaLes

Reply:Yep, and if you read the description under that Rustoleum paint, it's telling you the same thing I am. The type of paint you use isn't critical until you get to the stovetop, and then it's not recommended. I worked in a paint shop in the 70's. We would get people that rented places with those godawful green, brown and harvest gold appliances. They would spend $200 to get them repainted but they wouldn't buy the landlord new appliances. I told them all the same thing about the stovetops, but most of them didn't care because they would be moving on before the paint became an issue. I recall some of the paint schemes they came up with were sometimes worse than what they were trying to cover. Go ahead and paint it, but your wife will be replacing it in the next year anyway.250 amp Miller DialArc AC/DC StickF-225 amp Forney AC Stick230 amp Sears AC StickLincoln 180C MIGVictor Medalist 350 O/ACut 50 PlasmaLes
Reply:It's a rental property actually. I'm looking at prices for a used or highly discounted stove top after all of this conversation.. I bought the appliance paint last night to use on the hood and the oven door. Thanks for everyone's replies! You guys are very helpful.
Reply:If you bought the epoxy version, be very careful which hardeners and thinners you use with it to spray. Try to get it from the manufacturer if possible. I've seen some combinations that didn't get along. Kitchen appliances also get a lot of grease in them that can cause fish eyes in the paint. Even if you used a sander, I would highly recommend wet sanding with 360 to 400 grit by hand after you are done. I good precleaner like that used to remove tar and wax from automotive paints would be a good plan. If you have some old air dry enamel reducer around (like what Northern Paint sells) that will work good too.250 amp Miller DialArc AC/DC StickF-225 amp Forney AC Stick230 amp Sears AC StickLincoln 180C MIGVictor Medalist 350 O/ACut 50 PlasmaLes
